Jamestown Jammers News Release
JAMESTOWN, NY - Throughout the 2014 New York-Penn League season, a lot of things haven't gone the Jamestown Jammers way. There have been a lot of close losses, a lot of bad breaks, and some bad luck here and there. However, there has always been a great deal of talent on this team. That talent was on full display Thursday night, as the Jammers swept the New York-Penn League's best team, the Hudson Valley Renegades, 4-1 in Game 1, and 4-2 in Game 2 of a doubleheader at Diethrick Park.
In game 1, the Jammers got on the board first, with one run in the bottom of the fourth inning. Designated hitter Michael Suchy would crush a triple to right field. Then, during the at-bat of the next hitter, first basemen Kevin Ross, a wild pitch would allow Suchy to cross the plate to make the score 1-0 Jammers .
Jamestown would add three more runs to their lead in the bottom of the fifth. Third basemen Francisco Aponte would begin the rally with a lead-off single to right field. Shortstop Trace Tam Sing would then bunt Aponte over to second base. Catcher Deybi Garcia would walk to put runners on second and first with one out. Second basemen Erik Lunde then collected the big hit of the inning, with a 2-RBI triple, which would score both Aponte, and Garcia. Center fielder Elvis Escobar followed Lunde's triple with an RBI single to make the score 4-0 in favor of the Jammers after five.
The only offense Hudson Valley could mount came in the top of the seventh inning. Second basemen Jace Conrad singled through the hole at second base with one out. Two batters later, left fielder Clayton Henning doubled to left field, which would score Conrad, and account for the Renegades only run.
Austin Coley got the start for Jamestown, and worked two scoreless innings of one hit ball. He would be relieved in the top of the third by Montana DuRapau, who pitched extremely effectively. DuRapau would work five innings, only give up three hits, strike out five, and pick up the win for the Jammers.
Escobar (2), Suchy, Aponte, and Lunde picked up the hits for Jamestown.
The Renegades came out of the gates strong in game 2, by scoring two runs in the top of the first inning against Jamestown starter, Frank Duncan. Center fielder Braxton Lee would start the game with a walk. Lee would move to second on a single by the next batter, right fielder Bralin Jackson. After a groundout moved the runners to second and third with one out, left fielder Hunter Lockwood hit a sac fly to center field, which would score Lee. A Jamestown error would allow Jackson to score, and give the Renegades an early 2-0 lead.
Faced with an early deficit, the Jammers impressively responded with a four run first inning of their own. Center fielder Elvis Escobar led-off the rally with a single, and scored on a double by the next hitter, left fielder Jordan Luplow. Designated hitter Taylor Guhse would then reach on an error, and a ground out by Michael Suchy allowed Luplow to advance to third, and Gushue to advance to second with one out. Catcher Kevin Krause then drilled a single up the middle to score Luplow, and Gushue advanced to third on the play. David Andriese, the Jammers first basemen, then launced a double over the head of the Hudson Valley center fielder to score Gushue and Krause, and give the Jammers a 4-2 lead after one full inning of play.
4-2 would remain the score for the rest of the game, as Duncan settled down on the hill for Jamestown. In 3 2/3 innings of work, Duncan would give up four hits, the two first inning runs, and strike out two. He would be relieved by Nicholas Neumann, who also looked great on the mound for the Jammers, firing 2 1/3 perfect innings, with three strikeouts. Neumann also picked up the win for Jamestown. Luis Urena came on to pitch the last inning for the Jammers, struck out one batter in a perfect inning, and picked up the save.
Jamestown and Hudson Valley will finish their three game series tomorrow night at Diethrick Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05pm. Jake Brigham, who is on a rehab assignment from Triple-A Indianapolis, will be on the mound for the Jammers. He will be opposed by right-handed pitcher Jose Alonzo of the Renegades.
