State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Nick Thompson collected five hits on the night, including three in the evening's second game, as the State College Spikes pounded out 14 hits during Game Two to defeat the Aberdeen IronBirds, 8-2, and earn a split after the IronBirds' 3-2 victory in Game One of Thursday night's doubleheader at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Thompson and Jhohan Acevedo each produced a trio of hits for the Spikes (32-15) in the back half of the twin bill, while Chase Raffield went 2-for-3 with a two-run fifth-inning triple. State College gave up the first run of the contest, then reeled off the next three and added three runs in the fifth and two in the sixth to put away the seven-inning game.

Jake Stone went 2-for-4 for the Spikes in the second game of the doubleheader and added his second RBI of the night after knocking in a run in the opener.

State College starter Dewin Perez (4-1) earned the win in Game Two with six innings of work in which he allowed two runs on five hits and two walks. Perez also struck out a career-high eight batters on the night. Tyler Bray added a perfect seventh inning to finish the victory.

Aberdeen (16-30) starter Lucas Long (0-1) retired the first seven batters he faced in his initial appearance for the IronBirds, but took the loss. Long yielded three runs on seven hits while recording five strikeouts over 3 2/3 innings.

In the night's first game, State College trailed, 2-0, going into the sixth, but got two-out RBI singles from both Stone and Thompson to knot the game. Thompson was the lone Spike with multiple hits in the game.

Aberdeen got back-to-back base hits from Steve Wilkerson and Jay Gonzalez to start the seventh, though, and Alex Murphy's sacrifice fly gave the IronBirds a lead they would not relinquish.

Spikes reliever Brandon Lee (1-1) took the loss in his second appearance with the club. Lee, who earned the win on Sunday in Mahoning Valley, took the loss after yielding the go-ahead run in his only inning of work.

Will Anderson started and went six innings on the mound for State College. Anderson gave up two runs, one of them earned, on nine hits and a walk while striking out four.

Derrick Bleeker (0-2) got the win in relief for Aberdeen, despite allowing the Spikes' tying runs in the sixth. Bleeker logged two innings in which he gave up a total of three hits and a hit batsman while striking out two batters.

IronBirds starter Tanner Chleborad tossed five scoreless innings, allowing three hits and three walks while striking out one.

Each team recorded three double plays on the game, all on groundballs.
