Aberdeen IronBirds News Release
State College, PA - The Aberdeen IronBirds split a double header with the State College Spikes, taking the opener 3-2 while falling in the night cap 8-2.
Riley Palmer extended his hitting streak to six games as he got things going for Aberdeen in the second inning with a solo home run, making it 1-0 IronBirds.
Following the top of the second, rain moved through the area, forcing a 32 minute delay in the action.
Once play resumed, IronBirds' starter Tanner Chleborad did a terrific job keeping State College off the scoreboard. He pitched five innings, allowing just three hits and three walks, striking out one.
Chleborad left the game with the IronBirds up 2-0 after Palmer had another RBI base knock, hitting a double down the left field line in the top of the fifth, scoring Alex Murphy.
Derrick Bleeker came on to relieve Chleborad in the sixth. The Spikes greeted him rudely, collecting three base hits and taking advantage of a hit batter. State College tied the game and stranded the go ahead run at second.
Aberdeen would retake the lead in the top of the seventh, as Steve Wilkerson led off with a single. After a Jay Gonzalez infield single that moved Wilkerson over to third, Murphy hit a fly ball to deep right center that was enough to get Wilkerson home, making the score 3-2 Aberdeen.
Bleeker retired the Spikes in order in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for the IronBirds.
In game two, the IronBirds got a 1-0 lead in the first inning on an Austin Anderson RBI single, scoring Federico Castagnini from second.
State College tied the game in the third and took the lead for good in the fourth off of IronBirds' starter Lucas Long.
Aberdeen scored their second run in the fifth when Cory Segui hit a one out single and scored on an Alex Murphy RBI double.
The Spikes scored three in the fifth and two in the sixth to secure the 8-2 win.
Long took the loss for the IronBirds in game two, as the Spikes' Dewin Perez earned his fourth win of the season.
David Hess will get the start for the IronBirds in tomorrow's rubber match. He will face the Spikes' Austin Gomber. First pitch is scheduled for 7:05 p.m.
