Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - Mott Hyde hit a game-tying home run in the tenth inning, but the visiting Scrappers scored on a passed ball in the top of the eleventh, as Mahoning Valley topped the Tri-City ValleyCats 7-6.

The 'Cats did get on the board first, as Ricky Gingras and Hyde added RBI base hits in the first inning, taking a 2-0 lead in the process. After the Scrappers pushed a run across against Tri-City starter Joe Musgrove in the fourth inning, Derek Fisher hit an RBI single to right field to stretch the 'Cats lead to 3-2 in the bottom of the fifth.

However, the Scrappers came back to tie the game in the top of the sixth, when first baseman Leo Castillo hit a fly ball to deep left field, advancing to third with a triple when the ball went underneath the fence. The base hit, which came with two outs, pushed two runners across, and knotted the score at three apiece.

In the following frame, Mahoning Valley was able to take the lead on a back-to-back singles by Austin Fisher and Greg Allen, giving the Scrappers a 5-3 advantage.

But the ValleyCats were able to mount a comeback in the eighth, when Juan Santana drove home Hyde with an RBI double, then Ariel Ovando scored on a ground out by Jake Rodriguez.

The game remained tied all the way until the top of the tenth frame, when Castillo hit a RBI single off of ValleyCats reliever Jordan Mills, scoring Francisco Mejia.

That RBI put the Scrappers on top 6-5, but Hyde's home run (his first as a professional) leading off the bottom of the tenth, tied the score and sent the game into the 11th.

Unfortunately, the Scrappers scored again in the top of that inning, when Austin Fisher came home on a passed ball by Rodriguez.

With two outs in the bottom of the frame, Tri-City left fielder Terrell Joyce hit a fly ball to deep center field, but Scrappers centerfielder Bradley Zimmer tracked it down, making a running game-ending catch as he crashed into the wall.

Although the loss gives the ValleyCats their first three-game losing streak of the season, they still hold a six-game lead over the Connecticut Tigers for first place in the Stedler Division standings.

This three-game series will conclude tomorrow with a 7pm first pitch. Making his first professional start for the ValleyCats will be RHP Jay Gause (0-0, 4.50). He will face Scrappers RHP Cameron Hill (0-1, 1.24).
