-SPIKES CONTINUE FIVE-GAME HOMESTAND TONIGHT: The State College Spikes hold a seven-game lead over Williamsport in the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division as they once again face division opposition tonight when the Mahoning Valley Scrappers come to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park for the second game of a two-game mini-series. Tonight marks the second of ten meetings of the season between the two teams, and continues a five-game homestand for the Spikes. State College will also welcome Auburn to the ballpark for a three-game series starting on Thursday. The Spikes are 38-43 all-time against the Scrappers, with a 25-16 mark in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: Alex De Leon contributed a pair of hits, including his second professional triple, but the State College Spikes dropped a 3-1 decision to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
De Leon singled in the first inning and tripled to right-center field in the seventh. The State College designated hitter also walked in the third inning, helping to extend the inning so Jake Stone could knock in Darren Seferina with the lone Spikes run.
Stone also extended his on-base streak to 19 games with the RBI single. The streak is just seven games behind Rowan Wick's Spikes-record string.
Trey Nielsen started and took the loss for State College. The right-hander allowed two runs on five hits and a walk over four innings of work. Nielsen struck out four batters in the effort.
-SCHUMACHER STARTS FOR SPIKES TONIGHT: Right-hander Cody Schumacher makes his sixth professional start tonight for State College. The Missouri State product has gone at least five innings in each of his last two starts, becoming the first 2014 draftee to hit the five-inning mark for a single appearance. Schumacher was outstanding against Brooklyn on July 10, throwing 5 2/3 shutout innings and giving up just one hit and two walks. The 2014 36th-round draft choice followed by yielding five runs over five innings against Vermont, but did not factor in the decision.
-BRADY GOES TO HILL FOR SCRAPPERS: Left-hander Sean Brady makes the start for Mahoning Valley this evening. Brady is making his team-leading eighth start of the year, and has gone six innings in two of his last three outings. The Indians' fifth-round draft choice in 2013, Brady held Connecticut scoreless over his six frames on the mound to get the win on Friday. The Cape Coral, FL native was selected out of Ida Baker High School last year, and went 0-1 with a 1.97 ERA in 10 starts for the Arizona League Indians last year.
-WICK PROMOTED TO PEORIA : The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that Rowan Wick, the Spikes' single-season home run record holder, has earned promotion to the Single-A Peoria Chiefs. Wick took just 19 games to break the previous Spikes single-season home run record of 10, set by David Washington just last year. The Cardinals' 2012 ninth-round draft choice currently leads the New York-Penn League with 14 homers, and also tops the league in runs batted in with 38. The North Vancouver, BC native is also second in the NYPL with a .378 batting average. Wick set a franchise record by reaching base in each of the last 26 games he played for the Spikes.
-SPIKE MARKS: Jake Stone saw his 14-game hitting streak come to an end on Sunday after going 0-for-2 and being walked on four pitches in his last appearances...The streak was the longest since Brian Friday's club record 18-game string in 2007...Stone is still working on his 19-game on-base streak...The Scrappers are now on a five-game winning streak...Four Spikes pitchers - Jacob Booden, Jeff Rauh, Kyle Grana and Nick Lomascolo - are among the top five in the NYPL in appearances this season...Grana's 34 strikeouts are the fourth-most in the league, and his 13.91 strikeouts per nine innings are second-most among NYPL relievers
