Aberdeen IronBirds News Release

IronBirds Hold On, Defeat Brooklyn, 7-6

The IronBirds established a five-run lead in the fifth inning, Aberdeen's bullpen held off the Cyclones' offensive threat until the very last out. After tying the game in the bottom of the third, the IronBirds erupted for five runs in the fifth, courtesy of RBIs from Alex Murphy, Riley Palmer, and Justin Viele. Two more runs scored courtesy of an errant throw from Brooklyn left fielder Michael Conforto. The Cyclones fought back late in the game, as RBIs from Amed Rosario, Jhoan Urena, and Michael Conforto cut the IronBirds lead to two in the eight inning. One Brooklyn runner scored in the ninth inning, courtesy of a throwing error from Hector Veloz, but Ivan Hernandez was able to shut the door and earn his second save of the season.

Not Just a One-Hit Wonder

Four IronBirds batters- Austin Anderson, Alex Murphy, Hector Veloz, and Riley Palmer- had multi-hit games last night. Anderson and Murphy had three hits apiece and Palmer and Veloz had two hits apiece. Aberdeen batters now have 57 multi-hit games on the season.

Tarpley Shines on the Mound

After a few shaky appearances, Stephen Tarpley put together his best appearance of the season, allowing four hits, two runs, two earned runs, one walk, and striking out seven batters over six innings pitched. He has only lasted six innings once in his prior six appearances. The seven strikeouts are the most he's thrown all season.

No Stopping the RoboCop

Catcher Alex Murphy put together a very solid offensive night, going 3-5 with two RBIs and two runs scored. The two RBIs he had tied the game and gave the IronBirds the lead. He now has 14 RBIs on the season, which is tied with Hector Veloz, for most on the team.

On The Mound Tonight...

The IronBirds will send RHP Pat Connaughton to the mound tonight against Brooklyn. Connaughton is 0-1 on the year and has pitched to a 3.00 ERA over 9.0 innings. In his last appearance, he allowed five hits, four runs (all unearned), and struck out three against Tri-City on July 17. In his only appearance against Brooklyn, he went two innings, allowed no hits, no runs, and struck out three.
