Lowell Spinners News Release
LOWELL, MASS. - The Lowell Spinners jumped out to a 5-0 first inning lead, but the Vermont Lake Monsters battled back, held on through a one hour, one minute rain delay and handed the Spinners their second straight loss Wednesday night, 8-6.
Lowell (17-22) got the crowd into things early, jumping out to a quick five-run lead. After two quick outs to start the first, back-to-back singles by Sam Travis and Jordan Betts got the rally started. Mike Meyers followed with a triple, scoring both men, to give the Spinners the early lead. An infield single by Cisco Tellez plated Meyers and Mauricio Dubon followed with his third home run of the season to left-centerfield, extending the lead to 5-0.
Vermont (15-24) responded with a pair of runs in the top half of the second with Tuesday's hero, Seong-min Kim delivering a two-run double to cut the lead to three.
The Lake Monsters pulled within a run in the third inning, scoring a pair of runs with two-outs on an RBI double by John Nogowski and a run scoring single by Ben McQuown.
While the Spinners bats went quiet, Vermont took the lead in the fourth. After Kim was hit by a pitch to start the inning, a Yairo Munoz double scored Kim to tie the game and chase Spinners' starter Jake Drehoff. Chandler Shepherd came out of the bullpen, but could not strand the inherited runner, as Munoz scored on a Scott Masik single to give Vermont the lead.
After the Lake Monsters plated a run in the sixth against Ellis Jimenez, the Spinners cut the deficit back to one-run on a Dubon sacrifice fly. Jimenez was able to keep Vermont off the board in the top half of the seventh before the one hour, one minute rain delay halted play.
After the rains came to an end, the Spinners went quietly in the bottom half of the inning while Vermont tacked on an insurance run in the eighth against Carlos Pinales for what would hold as an 8-6 final at soggy LeLacheur Park.
Meyers led the Spinners offense with a three-hit night, adding two RBI, while Jordan Betts and Tellez each had two-hit games. Dubon had three RBI, playing in front of his host family from Sacramento.
Staked to a five-run lead, Drehoff (0-3, 5.71) couldn't hang on, allowing six runs on six hits and two walks over three innings. Shepherd allowed his inherited runner to score, but did not allow another, striking out one over two innings. Jimenez and Pinales were each charged with a run over their two inning stints.
The homestand continues Thursday night when the Hudson Valley Renegades arrive in town for a three-game set. It's Christmas in July and Santa Claus will be in attendance, with the first 1,000 fans receiving Ugly Christmas Sweater Jerseys, courtesy of Sam Adams. Kevin McAvoy (0-0, 0.00) gets the ball for a 7:05 first pitch.
