Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

LOWELL, MA --- John Nogowski went 4-for-5 and Scott Masik was 3-for-6 with a go ahead RBI single in the fourth inning as the Vermont Lake Monsters rallied from a 5-0 first-inning deficit to beat the Lowell Spinners 8-6 in New York-Penn League action Wednesday night at LeLecheur Park.

Vermont starter Jerad Grundy retired the first two batters in the bottom of the first inning, but then allowed five straight hits including a Mike Myers (three hits) two-run double and Mauricio Dubon two-run homer for a 5-0 Spinners lead in the bottom of the first inning. Grundy settled down after the first inning, giving up just three hits over the next four innings to earn his first win of the season as the Lake Monsters rallied.

Seong-min Kim got the comeback started with a two-run double in the top of the second inning before Nogowski had an RBI double and Ben McQuown a two-out RBI single in the third inning to cut the deficit to one run. Yairo Munoz tied the game in the fourth inning with an RBI double, then scored the go ahead run two batters later on Masik's RBI single for the 6-5 lead. All six runs came off Lowell starter Jake Drehoff (0-3), who allowed six hits with two walks and three strikeouts over three-plus innings.

Three straight one-out singles from Masik, Joe Bennie and Max Kuhn loaded the bases in the sixth with the Lake Monsters able to plate a run when Ellis Jimenez uncorked a wild pitch on a strikeout of McQuown which could have ended the inning. After the Spinners got a run back in the sixth, Vermont again put together three straight singles from Bennie, Kuhn and Nogowski to lead off the eighth before Bennie scored on a McQuown forceout at second base.

Dominique Vattuone allowed just one hit (erased on a double play) as he struckout two of the nine batters he faced over three scoreless innings for his first save of the season. Bennie, McQuown and J.P. Sportman each had two hits in the 17-hit attack for Vermont, the most hits in a game for the Lake Monsters since 17 at Lowell on June 30, 2013. The five-run come-from-behind victory was also Vermont's largest since September 4, 2011 when the Lake Monsters rallied from a 5-0 deficit for an 11-7 victory over Tri-City.

The victory gave the Lake Monsters a sweep of the two-game series at Lowell and also marked the team's first two-game winning streak since June 21-22. Vermont will look for a season-high third straight win on Thursday when they open a three-game series in Brooklyn against the Cyclones. The Lake Monsters then head to Hudson Valley for a three-game series before returning to historic Centennial Field to begin a six-game homestand on Wednesday.
