-SPIKES RETURN HOME TO START STRETCH RUN: The State College Spikes come back to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park tonight to start the final quarter of the New York-Penn League schedule with the opener of a three-game series against the Mahoning Valley Scrappers. The Spikes lead the New York-Penn League Pinckney Division by 6 1/2 games over Auburn, while Mahoning Valley sits in sixth place, 8 1/2 games. back. State College returns from a six-game road trip that ended in extra innings last night in Connecticut, while Mahoning Valley's home game against Staten Island last night was stopped in the second inning due to rain. The Spikes have taken three of five matchups against the Scrappers this season. All-time, State College is 41-44 against the Scrappers, but holds a 26-16 mark in games played at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
-LAST GAME: Danny Diekroger doubled in the tying run for the State College Spikes in the eighth inning, but the Connecticut Tigers scored the winning run in the bottom of the 12th to take a 2-1 victory on Monday night at Dodd Stadium.
Diekroeger's double plated Robelys Reyes after a two-out walk had put the tying run on base in the eighth. The hit increased the Stanford product's RBI total to 24 on the season, and helped send the Spikes into extra innings for the fifth time on the season.
In the 10th and 11th frames, State College put the go-ahead run at third base, but did not score on either occasion. Darren Seferina singled with one out in the tenth, and the New York-Penn League All-Star got to second on a balk, then stole third. However, he was stranded to end the inning. Adam Ehrlich would then double to lead off the 11th, but pinch-runner Brett Wiley was thrown out at the plate trying to score from third on a grounder to first.
Connecticut then took the win in the 12th as Derek Hill walked, moved to second on a sacrifice bunt, and scored on Steven Fuentes's single to center field.
Seferina, Reyes and Ehrlich all produced multiple hits for State College, with Seferina adding a triple.
-ALL-STAR ANDERSON STARTS FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Will Anderson makes his tenth start of the year for the Spikes, and his first since being selected for the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Saturday. Anderson has won each of his last five decisions, with his fifth win coming this past Wednesday against Lowell. The 2013 26th-round draft choice tossed seven shutout innings, allowing six hits and a walk while striking out five. On the season, Anderson has recorded 43 strikeouts to just eight walks. The righty has not yet faced the Scrappers this year.
-SCRAPPERS SEND MERRYWEATHER TO HILL: Right-hander Julian Merryweather makes his 10th start and 11th overall appearance with Mahoning Valley tonight. Merryweather, the fifth-round draft choice of the Indians this year out of Oklahoma Baptist, took the loss last time out as he gave up one run on three hits and three walks over four innings against Brooklyn on Thursday. The Berkley, CA native has gone a maximum of five innings on three separate occasions this year. Merryweather holds a 5.30 ERA in five road starts, and makes his first outing against the Spikes tonight.
