Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- Four Vermont pitchers combined on a three-hit shutout, while the offense scored three runs in the first and third innings as the Lake Monsters opened a six-game homestand with a 6-0 shutout victory over the Aberdeen Ironbirds on Tuesday night at historic Centennial Field.

Dillon Overton, Oakland's second-round pick in the 2013 draft out of Oklahoma, tossed three perfect innings in his second start and first at Centennial Field for the Lake Monsters. Overton needed just 39 pitches (24 for strikeouts) to set down all nine Ironbirds he faced, including three on strikeouts. Brett Graves, Oakland's third-round pick in the 2014 draft out of Missouri, took over in the fourth and retired the first eight batters he faced until a Tad Gold two-out single in the top of the sixth gave Aberdeen its first base runner of the game. Graves (3-1) allowed just the one hit with two strikeouts over three innings (34 pitches, 25 strikes) to earn the win.

Daniel Gossett, the Athletics 2014 second-round pick out of Clemson, came on in the seventh to get a double play and strikeout after a leadoff fielding error. Gossett also gave up a one-out single while striking out in the eighth inning for four strikeouts in his two innings (26 pitches, 19 strikes). Lee Sosa allowed a leadoff walk and single in the ninth before closing out the game with a strikeout and a pair of popouts. It was the third shutout of the season for Vermont and the first since back-to-back shutouts on June 17th and 18th.

Vermont got all the runs they would need in the first inning on a Jose Brizuela RBI double and Max Kuhn two-out, two-run single. The Lake Monsters added three more runs in the third on a Kuhn RBI double, Seong-min Kim RBI single and a run-scoring wild pitch. All six runs were charged to Aberdeen starter Tanner Chleborad (1-2), who walked three and gave up eight hits in two-plus innings. Ironbirds relievers Nigel Nootbaar and Augey Bill combined to allow three hits over six scoreless innings of relief.

Kuhn was 2-for-3 with three RBI to extend his hitting streak to nine games for the Lake Monsters, while Yairo Munoz, Brizuela and Kim each had two hits. With the victory, Vermont is now 8-3 in the month of August for the first-time in the team's 21-year history (the Lake Monsters have not had a winning August since 2000).

Vermont (25-33) and Aberdeen (20-37) are scheduled to play the second of the three-game series on Wednesday at Centennial Field beginning at 7:05 pm. The first 750 kids will receive a free CHAMP Jersey Lunch Bag Cooler courtesy of Xfinity.
