State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - New York-Penn League All-Star Darren Seferina and Nick Thompson each collected three hits for the State College Spikes, but the Mahoning Valley Scrappers shut out the Spikes to pick up a 5-0 win on Tuesday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Seferina, who on Saturday was named to the NYPL All-Star Game at second base for the South squad, reached base in each of his last three at-bats, including a base hit in the seventh on which he hustled to extend it to a double. Thompson doubled in the fourth inning and produced a hit in each of his first three at-bats. However, the Spikes (33-25), who had eight hits total, left at least one man on base in every inning and 11 in total during the game.

Mahoning Valley (25-32) used two-out production to get on the board in the fourth inning on an RBI single from David Armendariz and added another run in the fifth with another two-out single from Bradley Zimmer. The Scrappers then added two runs on Yonathan Mendoza's two-out single following an error in the sixth, and scored their final run in the ninth, again with two outs, on Zimmer's double to center field.

Will Anderson (5-2), who is headed to the NYPL All-Star Game as well, saw his streak of consecutive wins end at five as he took his first loss since June 18. Anderson allowed four runs, two of them earned, on seven hits and a walk over 5 2/3 innings. The right-hander also struck out seven, his highest single-game total since setting the Spikes record with 10 on June 29 against Williamsport.

Scrappers reliever David Speer (1-0) got the win after giving up five hits and striking out four batters over four innings of work. Speer took over for starter Julian Merryweather in the fourth after Merryweather had allowed two hits and recorded two strikeouts.

Zimmer put together a three-hit game for Mahoning Valley, while Mendoza and Steven Patterson each produced two hits for the Scrappers.

Despite the loss, the Spikes' sixth in a row, State College stayed at the top of the NYPL Pinckney Division with a six-game lead over Auburn. The Spikes' magic number to clinch a division crown is still 14.
