-SPIKES CONTINUE SECOND HALF OF HOMESTAND AGAINST SPINNERS: The Spikes continue their 10th Season tonight with the middle game of a three-game series against the Lowell Spinners, affiliate of the Boston Red Sox, to Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. State College is still one of six teams within a game-and-a-half of the New York-Penn League Wild Card lead, with Lowell being another. Thursday, the Spikes salvaged the last game of a three-game set against Vermont that opened the homestand. State College is 12-14 all-time against Lowell, but 8-5 against the Spinners at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

-LAST GAME: Orlando Olivera drove in all three State College runs, and the Spikes' pitching staff struck out a total of 16 batters, the most in team history for a nine-inning game, but the Lowell Spinners scored six runs in the eighth inning to take a 9-3 decision on Friday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park. A crowd of 5,084 fans, the third-largest attendance of the season, saw the Spikes take a 3-2 lead in the sixth on Olivera's two-run single. However, Lowell responded with a Brandon Magee RBI double to tie the game in the seventh, then sent 11 batters to the plate in the eighth to garner the victory. The game was a duel between Spikes starter Landon Beck and Spinners starter Jose Almonte early, with both pitchers retiring eight batters in a row at one point. Beck struck out nine, one less than the Spikes' single-game record, over six innings on the hill.

-CROSS GETS BALL FOR SPIKES: Right-hander Carson Cross gets the ball for State College tonight. Cross is making his fifth start and sixth overall appearance as a professional this evening. The Cardinals' 14th-round draft choice in 2015 out of UConn, Cross went four scoreless innings at Hudson Valley on Saturday in his last start, allowing two hits and two walks while striking out a career-high three batters. The Brentwood, NH native has a 2.25 ERA over eight innings in two home appearances this year. Right-handed hitters have an average of just .171 against Cross this year.

-SPINNERS GO WITH ROMERO TO HILL: Right-hander Dioscar Romero makes his eighth start of the year for Lowell this evening. Romero did not recieve a decision in his last start, a five-inning outing at home against Auburn on Sunday. The San Cristobal, Dominican Republic native allowed four runs, three of them earned, on five hits, a walk and a hit batsman. Romero also struck out four in the effort. The righty has gone at least five innings in every start since June 29 in which he walked less than five batters.

-GRAYSON DELIVERING BIG NUMBERS: Casey Grayson is still near the top of several leaderboards in the New York-Penn League. The University of Houston product is second in the NYPL in batting average with a .336 mark, just hundreths of a point behind Brendon Hayden of Williamsport. Grayson's .429 on-base percentage is third in the league, and he occupies spots in the NYPL's top five in hits (T-1st, 44), runs batted in (T-4th, 24) and walks (3rd, 22). The Cypress, TX native has also reached base in every home game he has played this season, a 21-game string.

-PINA SURGING AT THE PLATE: Leobaldo Pina's four-hit game this past Sunday was his second of the season, following the quartet of knocks he produced against Tri-City on July 15, and increased his average from .279 to .299 over last weekend. Pina is now tied with Grayson for second in the league with 43 hits, and is 7-for-21 over his last five games.

-SPIKE MARKS: Mike Pritchard is second in the NYPL in runs scored with 27...Juan Perez (6th, 2.27) and Ian McKinney (7th, 2.43) are both in the top ten in the NYPL in ERA...Pedro Echemendia, who earned his fourth relief win on Thursday, is now tied for the league lead with 13 appearances...Tate Matheny, son of St. Louis Cardinals manager Mike Matheny, is playing for Lowell after being drafted in the fourth round by the Red Sox this June.
