Spikes Squander Early Lead in 5-4 Loss to Spinners

State College Spikes News Release

STATE COLLEGE, PA - Jhohan Acevedo tied a State College Spikes record with two triples while driving in three runs, and Carson Cross delivered six quality innings on the mound, but a 4-0 lead for the Spikes became a 5-4 victory for Lowell Spinners on Saturday night at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.

Acevedo's bases-loaded triple in the first inning gave State College (19-21) a 3-0 lead, and his second triple of the game with two outs in the third set up the Spikes' other run. The Spikes outfielder became one of seven players in franchise history with a pair of three-base hits in the same game, with the last being Danny Martin on June 21 of this year.

Cole Lankford's single one batter after Acevedo's second triple made it a four-run game in favor of the Spikes.

Cross made the lead stand up through his tenure on the mound as he yielded just one run on four hits and a walk. The right-hander also struck out six batters on the evening, a career high, in his longest outing as a professional.

However, Lowell (22-19) began its comeback in the fourth when Josh Ockimey tripled in Victor Acosta. Ockimey would go 4-for-4 at the plate in the game and end up just a home run shy of the cycle.

The Spinners added three more runs in the seventh, with Brandon Magee bringing in a run with an RBI single, Luis Alexander Basabe plating a run on a fielder's choice, and Chad De La Guerra's sacrifice fly tying the game.

Ockimey's second triple of the game, which was just feet away from a home run to right field, led off the eighth. Mitch Gonsolus, the very next batter, then singled him in to give Lowell the lead for good.

Kevin Alexander (0-1), who entered the game with the bases loaded and one out for the Spikes, took the loss after giving up the eventual game-winning run. Alexander went 2 2/3 innings, giving up two hits and a walk while striking out four batters.

Spinners reliever Logan Boyd (2-0) got the win with four shutout innings. The southpaw allowed two hits and a walk while notching three strikeouts. Edwar Garcia (4) then got the final six outs, giving up two hits and striking out two, to earn the save.

Casey Grayson went 1-for-3 with a walk to extend his on-base streak at home to 22 games, the longest such string in the New York-Penn League.

The Spikes now look to take the final game of the three-game set at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park from the Spinners on Sunday. Left-hander Ian McKinney (3-2) will get the ball for State College, while left-hander Javier Rodriguez (0-2) makes the start for Lowell in the 6:05 p.m. matchup.
