Staten Island Yankees News Release
The Aberdeen Ironbirds (20-20) defeated the Staten Island Yankees (20-19) by the score of 7-5 on Jason Arnold bobblehead day. Jason Arnold was the first and only Staten Island Yankees to throw a no-hitter back in 2001.
The Yankees got on the board quickly in the bottom of the second inning. Jhalan Jackson drew a one-out walk and stole his third base of the season to advance to second base. Drew Bridges then brought Jackson in to score with an RBI single to left field.
In the bottom of the third inning Kevin Cornelius hit a two-run home run to straight-away centerfield to increase the Yankees lead to three. That was his first home run of the season.
Aberdeen scored their first run of the game in the top of the fifth inning. Mike Odenwaelder singled to centerfield, advanced to second on a Ricardo Andujar ground out, moved over to third on a wild pitch, and scored on Drew Turbin's single up the middle.
The Yankees immediately got the run back in the bottom of the fifth. Brandon Wagner reached on a double and crossed the plate on Zack Zehner's RBI single.
The Ironbirds hit two consecutive doubles to pull within two runs in the top of the sixth inning. D.J. Stewart doubled first before Chris Shaw drove him home.
In the seventh inning Aberdeen would take the lead for good. They scored three runs on two hits, two walks, and were aided by an error by Jake Hernandez. Yankees relief pitcher Andre Del Bosque struggled to find the zone as he walked the first two batters of the inning. After giving up a soft single to Turbin, Cedric Mullins reached on an RBI-single to first base. Another run scored after Hernandez's throwing error to tie the game up at four. D.J. Stewart then hit a sacrifice fly to left field to give Aberdeen a one-run lead.
Aberdeen tacked on two insurance runs in the top of the ninth inning. Wagner committed three errors to help fuel the two-run inning. Stewart drove in both Andujar and Oswill Lartiguez on an RBI-single to give the Ironbirds a 7-4 lead.
The Yankees ninth inning rally came up short as they fell to the Ironbirds 7-5. Junior Valera scored on a wild pitch and that was it for the Baby Bombers.
Derek Callahan pitched well for the Yankees going 6 innings, giving up six hits, two earned runs, one walk, and striking out two. Del Bosque (L, 0-1) gave up three runs (two earned) in 0.1 IP. Jonny Drozd gave up two unearned runs while striking out three in 2.2 innings of work.
The Yankees will finish their home stand tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Richmond County Bank Ballpark. This story was not subject to the approval of the National Association of Professional Baseball Leagues or its clubs.
