Tri-City ValleyCats News Release

TROY, NY - Hector Roa hit a home run in each of his first two at-bats, but the Tri-City ValleyCats fell to the Mahoning Valley Scrappers 7-4 at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium on Friday night, in the second game of a three-game series.

Roa, who played in four games with the ValleyCats in late June, rejoined the team after spending the past month with the Greeneville Astros in the Appalachian League. While in Greeneville, he hit for a .315 batting average in 27 games, with six home runs, six doubles, two triples, and 22 runs batted in.

That strong performance carried over into his return to Tri-City, as the 20-year old hit the first pitch he saw from Scrappers right-hander Shao-Ching Chiang in the bottom of the second inning just inside the right field foul pole, driving home Anthony Hermelyn with a two-run home run.

Two innings later, Roa slugged an 0-1 pitch from Chiang over the left field fence for a solo home run, becoming the second ValleyCat this season to hit two long balls in one game (Drew Ferguson hit two home runs against the Vermont Lake Monsters on July 1).

Unfortunately, Mahoning Valley scored five runs in the top of the first inning, one in the second, and one in the fifth, as they defeated Tri-City for the second straight night, giving the 'Cats consecutive home losses for the first time in 2015.

Other than Roa, Alexander Melendez was a bright spot offensively for the 'Cats, as he went 2-for-4 with a double, while Pat Porter hit an RBI single in the third, extending his hit streak to 11 games.

Ralph Garza struck out four batters in three scoreless relief frames, while Steve Naemark struck out one batter in a scoreless top of the ninth, while Tri-City held the Scrappers without a run over the final four innings.

The ValleyCats will now conclude this six-game homestand on Sunday, in their final game against the Scrappers. The 5 p.m., contest will feature a pitching matchup between Mahoning Valley RHP Casey Shane (1-2, 3.29), and Tri-City RHP Chris Murphy, who will be making his first appearance for the 'Cats. Murphy, a 24th round selection in the 2015 MLB Draft by the Houston Astros, posted a 1-0 record and a 2.25 earned run average, with 17 strikeouts over 20 innings, in seven games for the Greeneville Astros.
