Vermont Holds On For 4-3 Win At Williamsport
August 1, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
WILLIAMSPORT, PA --- The Lake Monsters scored three runs in the fifth inning for a 4-0 lead as three Vermont pitchers combined to allow just two hits over the first eight innings before holding off a ninth-inning Crosscutters rally for a 4-3 New York-Penn League victory over Williamsports on Saturday night at Bowman Field.
Vermont starter Bubba Derby allowed two hits with three strikeouts over the first three innings, while Tyler Painton tossed two perfect innings of relief with one strikeout and Corey Miller three hitless innings with one walk to keep Williamsport off the scoreboard for eight innings. After a leadoff single in the third inning, the three Lake Monster hurlers combined to retire 18 of the next 20 Williamsport batter through the eighth inning with the only baserunners coming on a two-out walk in sixth and two-out error in eighth.
The Lake Monsters took a 1-0 lead in the second as Brett Siddall led off the inning with a single and later scored an unearned run on a Trace Loehr two-out RBI single to rightfield. Vermont then scored three more runs in the fifth inning on just one hit, a Jesus Lopez leadoff single. After a strikeout for the first out, three straight walks by Crosscutter pitchers forced home Lopez with Vermont's second run. Seong-min Kim followed with a sacrifice fly and the third run of inning scored on a Williamsport error for a 4-0 Lake Monsters lead.
The Crosscutters finally got some offense in the ninth inning with back-to-back leadoff singles and a Jesus Passo two-run double off Vermont reliever John Gorman. Passo cut the deficit to 4-3 when he advanced to third on a flyout and scored on a Jan Hernandez RBI groundout, but Gorman got Carlos Duran to groundout to second base to end the game.
Vermont had just five total hits in the game, but Williamsport pitchers were charged with 10 walks. The 10 free passes were the most in a game for the Lake Monsters since August 27, 2010 when Vermont had 12 walks vs. Connecticut at Centennial (most walks for Lake Monsters in road game since 14 at Tri-City on August 30, 2008).
Starter Tyler Gilbert allowed three runs (two earned) on four hits with one walk and four strikeouts over 4 1/3 innings to take the loss for Williamsport (26-15), which still has the best record in the NY-Penn League while falling to 18-7 at Bowman Field.
With the victory, the Lake Monsters have assured themselves for at least a .500 record on the roadtrip after winning three of the first five games. Vermont (17-23) will wrap up the six-game roadtrip on Sunday at Williamsport beginning at 5:05 pm before returning to historic Centennial Field on Monday to begin a six-game homestand against the Staten Island Yankees and Brooklyn Cyclones through Saturday the 8th.
