Scrappers win 7-4
August 1, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Mahoning Valley Scrappers News Release
Thanks to a 7-4 win tonight against the Tri-City ValleyCats (22-19) on Saturday night at Joseph L. Bruno Stadium, the Mahoning Valley Scrappers (19-20) are all alone in third place in the Pinckney Division standings.
Mahoning Valley is still 8-2 in its last 10 games, and it has won five in a row. The Scrappers' longest winning streak last season was five games, and this is the longest one thus far this season. The Scrappers remain the hottest team in the New York-Penn League.
ValleyCats starter Zac Person didn't last more than 15 minutes in the first inning. He gave up five runs to the Scrappers in just the first.
Jodd Carter singled. Ka'ai Tom singled to left to score Carter. Tom later scored on a Daniel Salters single. The Salters single extended his hit streak to 12 games. Salters scored on a double for Connor Marabell. Marabell and Nate Winfrey (walk) scored on a two-run double for Juan De La Cruz. Yeyfry Del Rosario came in to face Silento Sayles as the last batter in the first, and struck him out.
The Scrappers added another in the top of the second. Willi Castro singled to center and later scored on a sacrifice fly to center for Mark Mathias. Mathias finished 0-for-2, to end his hit streak at 11 games.
The ValleyCats got two in the bottom of the second thanks to a two-run home run for Hector Roa. It was Roa's first home run since being called up from Greeneville Astros. Roa swung at the first pitch from Shao-Ching Chiang.
In the bottom of the fourth, Roa took the first pitch of his second at-bat of the night to left center for his second home run of the game. He swung at the first two pitches, and took Chiang deep twice.
The Scrappers added another run in the top of the fifth for a little insurance. Winfrey hit an RBI single to score Mathias.
Chiang (3-1) takes the win. He had a rough outing, giving up eight hits and four runs, while striking out four in five innings.
Cortland Cox came in for the next three, and struck out four in three innings. He also only allowed one hit. Yoiber Marquina earned his third save of the season.
Person (1-3) took the loss. He allowed five runs on five hits in two-thirds of an inning.
The Scrappers have now won six of their last seven series, and look for their first three-game sweep of the season, and an undefeated road trip on Sunday night at 5:00. Casey Shane takes the hill for Mahoning Valley.
