Auburn Doubledays News Release
AUBURN, NY - Hudson Valley and Auburn's pitching staffs battled back and forth all night until the Doubledays scored in the sixth and eventually won 1-0.
Taylor Hearn started for the Doubledays and was dealing from the start. The lefty was drafted by the Washington Nationals in the 5th round of the MLB Draft and mowed down the Renegades. Hearn didn't give up a hit until there were two outs in the fifth. Jose Paez hit a little dribbler down the third base line and was safe at first on the infield single, but was later stranded.
The Doubledays had two big opportunities in the first four innings. In the first, Kelvin Gutierrez doubled into left with two outs, but was stranded. In the fourth, Dalton Dulin led off with a double and moved over to third on the first out. But Auburn's four and five hitters couldn't bring him in and Dulin was stranded on third.
After a quick fifth inning where neither team had a runner reach second, the Doubledays struck in the bottom of the sixth. Edwin Lora led off with a bunt single down the third base line. Lora then moved to second on a sacrifice bunt off the bat of Victor Robles. With Lora on second, Dulin grounded out to first and Lora advanced to third with two outs. Gutierrez dug in next and lined a single up the middle between Hudson Valley's second baseman and shortstop. Lora scored from third and the Doubledays led 1-0 in the bottom of the sixth.
In the top of the seventh, the Renegades had their first big opportunity. Matt Dacey led off with a walk and moved to third two batters later when Hector Montes singled into center. But the threat pretty much ended there as Hudson Valley's six and seven hitters both struck out swinging.
After a quick bottom of the seventh and eighth, Hudson Valley was down to its final three outs. The first two hitters struck out again Mariano Rivera III before things got interesting. Montes reached on an error by Edwin Lora that should've ended the game. He then moved to third on a single to right off the bat of Nic Wilson. The Renegades had runners on the corners with two outs and a 1-0 score in the ninth when things got crazy. Jose Paez hit a grounder to second that was bobbled by Dulin, but the second baseman collided with Wilson and the base umpire Anthony Perez called out Wilson on runners interference and the game was over. Due to runner's interference, the Doubledays won 1-0.
Taylor Hearn was brilliant for Auburn, but didn't earn a decision. His line was: 5 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 3 K's. The only hit the lefty gave up was with two outs in the fifth. Connor Overton, Sam Johns, and Mariano Rivera III all pitched out of the bullpen and combined for the following line: 4 IP, 2 H, 0 R, 1 BB, and 4 K's.
The Renegades' two pitchers were great, but were on the losing side. Benton Moss started and took the loss with the following line: 6 IP, 4 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, and 4 K's. Tim Ingram came out of the bullpen and finished with the following line: 2 IP, 1 H, 0 R, 0 BB, and 1 K.
The rubber match of the series is tomorrow at 2:05 PM. Jefry Rodriguez gets the start for the Doubledays against Cameron Varga for the Renegades.
