Lowell Spinners News Release
STATE COLLEGE, PENN. - The State College Spikes scored three first inning runs, jumping out to a 4-0 lead in the third, but the Lowell Spinners once again showed resilience as they started August the same way they finished July, with a big 5-4 win over the Spikes, behind a four-hit night from Josh Ockimey.
State College (19-21) jumped out to an early lead as Dioscar Romero struggled with his control to start the game. Back-to-back walks, sandwiched around a throwing error by Romero on a pick-off attempt put the first two Spikes on. After a line-out, Romero walked the bases loaded and Jhohan Acevedo cleared the bases with a triple to the right field wall, giving State College a 3-0 lead.
The Spikes would add a run in the third, again taking advantage of an Acevedo triple to extend the lead to 4-0.
Lowell (22-19) got a run back in the fourth with a triple of their own, as a two-out triple from Josh Ockimey plated Victor Acosta to cut the deficit to three.
The Spinners pulled event in the seventh and Ockimey played a central role once again, leading off the inning with a double. After a walk and bunt single loaded the bases, a Brandon Magee single plated a run to bring Lowell within a pair. A force-out from Luis Alexander Basabe plated a second run and a Chad De La Guerra sacrifice fly, his fifth of the season, evened the score at four.
Lowell showed resiliency in the eighth, as Ockimey just missed a home run and what would have been the first cycle in franchise history, instead collecting his second triple of the night. Mitch Gunsolus followed with a single through the hole at second to give the Spinners a 5-4 lead that would hold for the final.
Romero struggled through three innings, allowing four runs on three hits and four walks. He struck out two. Logan Boyd (2-0, 3.46) pitched a career-high four innings to earn the win, striking out three while allowing just two hits. Edwar Garcia picked up his fourth save with two scoreless, striking out two.
Ockimey led the way offensively, finishing the night 4-for-4 with a double, two triples and an RBI, raising his average from .250 to .280. Gunsolus, with the game-winning hit, Basabe, De La Guerra and Magee collected the other Spinners RBI on the night.
The Spinners have now scored five runs or more in six straight games, their longest streak since 2008 and one game shy of tying a franchise record, set June 22-27, 1999. They go for the sweep Sunday in State College with a 6:05pm first pitch. Javier Rodriguez (0-2, 5.40) will look to build on his strong start in Williamsport when he gets the ball.
