Stars vs. Houston: First meeting of the season

The Houston Aeros will bring a record of 7-4-1, 15 points, into Thursday's game, having posted a record of 6-4 in their last 10 games. Houston is the AHL's third-most penalized team, racking up 330 PIM's in 12 games, an average of 27.5 minutes per game--- Erik Westrum leads the team with 18 points, including 13 assists: 12(5/13/18). Roman Voloshenko paces the club with nine goals. Goaltender Josh Harding has allowed 24 goals in eight games, while posting a 3.16 Goals Against Average, a .917 save percentage and a 5-3 record--- The Aeros have four players among the top-twenty pointleaders: Rank #4 - Westrum - 21pts; Rank #7 - Kirby Law - 12pts; Rank #17 - Voloshenko - 11pts; Rank #20 - Kurtis Foster - 11pts. Law, Voloshenko and Westrum have notched four power-play goals, ranking them 8th, 9th, and 10th in PPG--- The Aeros lost their last game, a 4-0 shutout at the hands of Peoria on Sunday. Houston had 21 total shots, including two in the first period. They were 0-3 on the power-play--- Houston has eight returning players from the 2004-05 season: Joey Tetarenko, Mark Rooneem, Bill Kinkel, Kirby Law, Josh Harding, Erik Reitz, Chris Heid, and Ryan Stokes.

The Milwaukee Admirals have won their last two games, including a 4-0 shutout win over the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights on Saturday. They defeated Houston 6-1 on Friday. The Admirals are in Chicago on Friday, at Grand Rapids on Saturday and then travel to Peoria for a Sunday afternoon game--- At print time - Kris Beech leads the Admirals with four goals and with seven overall points: 6(4/3/7). Sheldon Brookbank has racked up a team-high 29 penalty minutes--- The last time these two teams met, the Stars and Ads went to an 11-round shootout, with the Stars Patrick Traverse scoring a goal in the 11th round to give Iowa a 3-2 win on Friday, October 21st. David Oliver and Marius Holtet notched the other Iowa goals.

. Defenseman Patrick Traverse leads the team with nine points: (0/9/9) with all points coming via assists. He is tied for fourth among AHL defenseman in overall points and is second based on assists alone.

. Iowa, Milwaukee and Hartford are the only three teams that have not allowed a shorthanded goal this season.

. In two games against Chicago, goalie Mike Smith has faced 46 shots, allowing just three goals, a .935 save percentage.

The second Omaha goal came with goalie Dan Ellis on the bench in favor of the extra skater. The Stars peppered Omaha goalie Brent Krahn with 34 shots, but for the second time this season, the Knights' netminder shutout the Stars here in Des Moines. The Stars were unable to convert on their four powerplay chances.

Ellis NOTES: The Iowa Stars fell to the Griffins by the score of 62 at Van Andel Arena, despite outshooting them, 4134. The Stars held a 3424 shot advantage in the last two periods. The Iowa Stars received goals from Mathias Tjarnqvist and Loui Eriksson. For Tjarnqvist, it was his first goal of the season. He was assigned by Dallas to Iowa on Thursday after missing Dallas' first nine games with an injury. Eriksson's marker was his second of the 200506 campaign. Defenseman Patrick Traverse pickedup his teamleading eighth assist on the second goal. Forward Toby Petersen posted a franchisehigh eight shots in the game.

GOALS: IOW: Junior Lessard, 2 Mathias Tjarnqvist, Loui Eriksson CHI: S. Barney, J. Morrison NOTES: Exactly one week after defeating the Chicago Wolves 21 in overtime, the Stars returned to Allstate Arena this past Saturday and earned a convincing 42 win. Forward Junior Lessard netted his second goal of the season to start the scoring for the Stars at 13:36 of the first period. After Chicago tied it at one, Mathias Tjarnqvist scored his second goal in as many nights to give the Stars a 21 lead. That lead was short lived, as the Wolves tied the score with just :45 seconds left in the second period. With just over two minutes expired in the third period, Tjarnqvist potted his second of the game, the eventual gamewinner. Loui Eriksson added his third goal of the year, his second in two nights. Iowa outshot the Wolves 3318 in the game, including a 173 advantage in the third period. Goalie Mike Smith earned his second win of the year, facing 18 shots in the win.
