Manchester Monarchs News Release
DES MOINES, IA - Early goals by the Iowa Stars gave them the momentum to beat the Manchester Monarchs, 4-2, at the Wells Fargo Arena in front of 6,042 fans on Saturday night.
Manchester (26-12-1-4, 57 points) is in second place in the Atlantic Division. Iowa (21-19-1-1, 44 points) is in fourth place in the West Division.
The primary affiliate of the Dallas Stars took a 2-0 lead in the first period with goals from left wing Loui Eriksson and center Jamie Johnson. Eriksson's 11th goal of season came at 7:35 when he took a feed from center Yan Statsny, positioned behind the Monarchs net. Eriksson picked up the puck on the left side of the net, stick handled it through the crease and backhanded the puck around Monarchs goaltender Barry Brust's toes for the first goal of the game. Center Kyle Brodziak assisted on the goal to give Iowa a 1-0 lead.
Johnson sent a shot top-shelf over Brust for his sixth tally of the season at 15:12 of the first period. Left wing Janos Vas passed the puck over to Johnson at the bottom of the left face-off circle for the goal. Defenseman Shawn Belle assisted on the play to give Stars a two-goal lead.
With an extra jump in their step, the Monarchs came out of the locker room for the second period and were able to cut the Stars lead in half with a goal from center Yanick Lehoux at 5:23. Left wing Petr Kanko battled for the puck behind the Stars net. Once he gained control, Kanko brought the puck out in front and sent a backhand through the crease. Missing everyone, the puck came to the stick of Lehoux who fired it past Stars goaltender Mike Smith for his 10th goal of the season. Center Greg Hogeboom started off the play by sending the puck behind the net for Kanko.
The Stars regained their two-goal lead when Brodziak scored his fifth of the season at 14:04 of the middle frame. Right wing David Oliver brought the puck down the right side and sent a pass over to right wing Vojtech Polak at the hash marks. Polak opted to pass the puck to Brodziak who was streaking down the right wing. Brodziak scored from the bottom of the right face-off circle to bring the score to 3-1.
Left wing Jeff Tambellini scored a 5-on-3 power play goal at 18:24 of the second period. Lehoux sent the puck to defenseman Denis Grebeshkov at the point on the power play. Grebeshkov gave the puck to Tambellini at the top of the right face-off circle who shot a blistering slap shot past Smith for his 20th goal of the season.
Defenseman Mario Scalzo finished off the Monarchs with his third goal of the season at 11:30 of the third period. Brust made the initial save on right wing Junior Lessard's point blank shot and then cleared the puck out of the crease. The puck slid directly to Scalzo who lifted the puck over the diving Brust and into the corner of the net to finalize the score at 4-2. Left wing Mathias Tjarnqvist was also credited with an assist on the Stars final goal.
Brust (10-3-1) took the loss with 24 saves. Smith (10-11-1) earned his 10th victory of the season stopping 32 shots.
Manchester went 1-for-6 on the power play. Iowa was 0-for-4 with the man advantage.
Monarchs defenseman Richard Seeley was suspended for Saturday's game for instigating a fight within the last five minutes of Friday's game against the Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights. Seeley will return to the line-up for the Monarchs game on Sunday versus Peoria.
The Monarchs' final stop on their Midwest trip is against the Peoria Rivermen at the Carver Arena at the Peoria Civic Center on Sunday, January 22 at 7:00 p.m. (EST).
