Adirondack Phantoms News Release
ALBANY, NY - Pat Kavanagh wiped out a long personal scoring drought with two goals, including the game-winner in overtime, as the Phantoms picked up their second win in a row with a 3-2 decision over the Albany River Rats at Pepsi Arena.
The River Rats took a 1-0 lead into the first intermission on a tally from Aaron Voros at the 11:56 mark of the opening frame. Voros sent a left-circle wrist shot through a screen and past Jamie Storr to give his club the advantage.
But Philadelphia responded with a solid second period for the second consecutive night, picking up two power play goals to take a 2-1 lead. The first came at 3:03 when Jim Campbell scored his first goal in a Phantoms sweater off assists from Matt Ellison and John Slaney. Then at 16:11, Kavanagh snapped a 15-game goalless streak with assistance from Stephen Wood and Alexander Picard. It was his first goal since Dec. 7 vs. Manitoba.
The single-goal lead almost held up, but Voros struck again with just 2:57 remaining in regulation, knocking home a rebound to tie the game at 2-2 and force overtime between two of the three teams in the AHL without a shootout loss this season.
However, Kavanagh was not interested in letting things go on much longer. He was wide open in the slot when Slaney found him from the left wing corner, and was able to finish things off with a shot past Frank Doyle just 19 seconds into the extra session.
Each team mustered 24 shots on the evening. Storr registered his second consecutive win since returning from backup duty with the Flyers, stopping 22 shots. Doyle took the loss with 21 saves on the evening. Philadelphia has now won consecutive games for the first time since Dec. 9-10, nights that saw a 6-1 win over Albany and a 3-2 shootout win over Hartford, respectively.
The Phantoms return to the Wachovia Spectrum on Sunday to take on the Norfolk Admirals at 5:05 PM. Sunday is NASCAR Night at the Spectrum, with Phantoms die-cast mini cars for the first 5,000 fans.
