Bridgeport Islanders News Release
WILKES-BARRE, PA - The American Hockey League's Bridgeport Sound Tigers, top affiliate of the National Hockey League's New York Islanders, beat the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Penguins 7-0 on the road Saturday. It was the third win in as many meetings with the AHL's top team for the Sound Tigers who have handed the league-leaders three of their six regulation losses on the season.
The Sound Tigers jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead as Rob Collins scored his 12th goal of the season off an assist from Wyatt Smith just 23 seconds into the game and Sean Bergenheim tallied his 13th at 4:07 off assist from Bruno Gervais and Collins, his team-leading 40th point.
The markers were the second in as many games for both Collins, who is also on a six-game scoring streak, and Bergenheim, who is on a three-game point run. Collins scored from behind the Wilkes-Barre/Scranton net by banking a shot off the skates of goaltender Andy Chiodo while Bergenheim tipped a puck out of mid-air from just in front of the Penguins net at the end of a pretty rush up ice.
Matt Koalska upped the Sound Tigers' lead to 3-0 with his 12th goal of the season 2:57 into the middle frame off a pretty circle-to-circle feed by Masi Marjamaki with Ryan Caldwell earning the other helper.
In a game filled with great play, the most exciting moments came during a full two-minute, two-man advantage for the Sound Tigers just past the mid-point of the second period. Wilkes-Barre/Scranton penalty killers Ryan Stone, Alain Nasreddine and Rico Fata stayed on the ice for the entire sequence as did Joel Bouchard, David Masse, Travis Brigley, Smith and Collins for the Sound Tigers with the puck never leaving the Penguins zone. The Sound Tigers moved it well and took several quality shots, but Chiodo denied each one, and the capacity crowd roared as the spent eight specialty-teams skaters dragged themselves off the ice at the end of the power play.
The Sound Tigers made it a 4-0 game when Masse rifled a wrist shot through traffic off assists from Marjamaki and Smith for his seventh goal of the year with 7.4 seconds left in the middle frame.
The Sound Tigers put the game away with a trio of third-period, power-play goals. Marjamaki made it 5-0 then 6-0 with his fourth and fifth tallies on the year assisted by Koalska and Masse at 7:40 and Smith and Masse on a five-on-three at 14:59. Bouchard closed out the scoring with his third of the year off assists from Bergenheim and Jeremy Colliton with 13.1 left to play.
The Sound Tigers were 3 for 11 on the power play, 5 for 5 on the penalty kill and had a 34-27 shots on goal advantage. Marjamaki was the first star, Sound Tigers netminder Frederic Cloutier the second with 27 saves for his second shutout of the month and Smith the third. Chiodo also finished with 27 stops.
The Sound Tigers will visit Wilkes-Barre/Scranton again this Wednesday, January 25th at 7:05 p.m. and the Providence Bruins this coming Friday, January 27th at 7:05 p.m. before returning to Bridgeport's Arena at Harbor Yard to host the Philadelphia Phantoms next Saturday, January 28th at 7:05 p.m. on Wade Dubielewicz Bobblehead giveaway night and the Syracuse Crunch next Sunday, January 29th at 4:05 p.m. on Islanders 25th Anniversary puck giveaway night.
