Stars reign over Monarchs

DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and Manchester Monarchs met for their only regular season meeting Saturday night at Wells Fargo Arena. Behind the strength of a 32 save performance of goaltender Mike Smith, Iowa defeated the AHL's sixth ranked team, 4-2.

For the 24th time in 42 games this season, the Iowa Stars scored the maiden marker in the game. Left winger Loui Eriksson scored his 11th goal of the season at 7:35 of the first period. Jamie Johnson gave the Iowa Stars a two-goal lead at 15:12. With an assist on the Johnson goal, defenseman Shawn Belle earned his first point as a professional.

Yanick Lehoux closed the gap to one with his 10th goal of the season for Manchester. Rookie forward Kyle Brodziak gave Iowa a two goal lead with his fifth of the season and first since December 23rd. Forward David Oliver's assist on Brodziak's goal extended his point-streak to a franchise-high six games. Oliver now has three goals and three assists during that span. Skating 5-on-3, Jeff Tambellini's power-play goal pulled Manchester to within one goal going into the second intermission.

The Stars took the 3-2 lead and a 15-2-1-0 record when leading after two periods of play into the third period. Iowa continued the trend, adding an insurance goal by defenseman Mario Scalzo midway through the third period to secure the 4-2 victory.

Stars goalie Mike Smith faced 34 shots, including 18 in the third period.
