Cedar Park, TX - The Texas Stars (35-22-3-4, 77 Points) defeated the Houston Aeros (29-28-6-2, 66 Points) 4-3 on Saturday night in front of 6,110 fans at Cedar Park Center. Rookie center Colton Sceviour broke a 3-3 tie, scoring the game-winning goal with 5:41 left in regulation. Forward Ray Sawada posted a Gordie Howe hat trick, helping Texas improve to 8-1-0-1 against Houston this year. Texas goalie Matt Climie (18-15-3) picked up the win with 26 saves. Houston goalie Anton Khudobin (11-15-2) suffered the loss. Forwards Warren Peters and Travis Morin also scored, as the Stars improved to 19-11-1-2 on home ice this season. Texas hosts Peoria at 7:30 PM this Wednesday at Cedar Park Center.
Texas took a 2-0 lead in the first period, opening the scoring at 6:22. Stars winger Sergei Korostin picked off a Houston clearing attempt and centered the puck to Travis Morin. The Texas center beat Houston goalie Anton Khudobin on the stick side for his 18th goal of the year and a 1-0 Stars lead. Texas made it a 2-0 lead at 16:38, center Perttu Lindgren found right wing Ray Sawada in the Houston crease. Sawada snapped a wrist shot past Khudobin for his fifth goal of the season.
Houston cut the Texas lead in half at 8:52 of the second period. Forward Duncan Milroy picked up a rebound in the Stars crease and slipped the puck into the net for his ninth goal of the year. Texas carried a 2-1 lead into the third period.
In the third period, the Stars regained their two-goal lead just 1:15 into the final frame. Center Warren Peters skated into the Houston zone and snapped a wrist shot past Khudobin for his 15th goal of the year and a 3-1 Stars lead. Houston countered just 1:53 later with a power-play goal to trim the Stars lead to 3-2. Defenseman Ryan Gunderson beat Texas goalie Matt Climie with a wrist shot at 3:08 for his fifth goal of the year. Houston tied the game just 1:30 later, winger Duncan Milroy tipped a shot off a face-off, scoring his 10th of the year and tying the game 3-3 at 4:38. Texas took a 4-3 lead with 5:41 left in the third period. Rookie center Colton Sceviour fired a slapshot from the high slot in the Houston zone. Sceviour's sixth goal of the year was set up by Matt Stephenson and was his first tally since New Year's Eve in Manitoba.
Texas plays at home against the Peoria Rivermen on Wednesday, March 10th at 7:30 PM. On Wednesday, fans who bring an HEB Brand non-perishable food item will receive $5.00 off their ticket price. The Stars travel to San Antonio to take on the Rampage on Friday, March 12th at 7:00 PM as part of the State Farm Lone Star Faceoff.
