Norfolk Admirals News Release

NORFOLK, Va. - Goals by Dana Tyrell and Blair Jones would not be enough as the Norfolk Admirals (34-28-3-1) fell the Albany River Rats (34-24-3-4) 4-2 in front of 6,108 fans on Saturday night at Norfolk Scope Arena.

The Admirals fell three points back of the River Rats for second place in the American Hockey League's East Division. Next up for the Admirals is a pair of home contests next Friday and Saturday night against the Bridgeport Sound Tigers at Scope.

The Admirals took the lead midway through the first period on Dana Tyrell's sixth goal of the season. Ryan Craig dumped a puck from the right half wall toward the area behind the net guarded by River Rats goaltender Justin Pogge. Adam Hall retrieved the puck and sent a no-look backhand pass toward the goalmouth just before going behind the net. Dana Tyrell stuffed a backhand one-timer past the pads of Pogge and over the goal line at 10:44.

Albany took a 2-1 lead with a pair of goals late in the first period. Oscar Osala sent a pass from the top of the right circle to River Rats leading goal scorer Jerome Samson at the bottom of the left circle. Samson sent a one-timer shot that snuck under the right arm of Norfolk netminder Dustin Tokarski at 17:23 to tie the game at 1-1.

The River Rats took the lead just over one minute later. Jacob Micflikier attempted a shot from the low slot that was partially blocked and glanced off the right leg of Tokarski and back to the top of the goalmouth. Drayson Bowman collected the rebound and shot it past the right leg of Tokarski for a 2-1 lead.

Albany doubled its lead early in the second period on Jerome Samson's second goal of the contest. Nick Dodge dropped a pass for Samson in the high slot. Samson stepped into a slap shot that deflected off the stick of an Admirals defender and sailed over the right shoulder of Tokarski at 1:55 to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.

Albany stretched its lead to three goals less than four minutes later. Stefan Chaput sent a shot from behind the goal line in the right corner that banked into the net off Tokarski between his left arm and left leg at 5:21.

Norfolk out-shot Albany 13-5 in the third period and closed their gap to two goals with 5:59 left in regulation. Matt Lashoff sent a shot from the right point that Blair Jones deflected down and past Pogge for Jones' ninth goal of the season.

However, the Admirals could not solve Pogge again as they fell 4-2 to the River Rats.

Dustin Tokarski (28 shots, 24 saves) took the loss. Justin Pogge (31 shots, 29 saves) earned the win.

Norfolk was 0-3 on the power play. Albany was 0-2.
