Iowa Chops News Release
DES MOINES, IA - The Iowa Stars and the Chicago Wolves met for the second time this season and the first time at Wells Fargo Arena on Tuesday evening. The Wolves special teams were the story of Tuesday's game, as they scored three power-play goals and two shorthanded goals, en route to a 8-2 win.
Midway through the first period, the Wolves grabbed a 1-0 lead at 12:41. Right out of the penalty box, forward Guillaume Desbiens collected a pass from Steve Martins and skated in on Iowa Goalie Dan Ellis and fired a wrist-shot past the Iowa netminder. It was the sixth time in 15 games Iowa has allowed the game's first goal.
With 2:03 gone in the second period, the Stars evened the score at one goal apiece. Iowa's Loui Eriksson intercepted a pass at center ice and streaked down the left wall. Eriksson crossed the goal line wide of the net and sent a pass to the top of the crease to a waiting Chris Conner. Conner collected the pass and then recorded his fourth goal of the season. Rookie Brett Sterling gave the Wolves a 2-1 lead with a power-play goal at the 4:08 mark. Veteran Center Steve Martins spotted the Wolves a two-goal lead when he scored a shorthanded breakaway goal just 1:22 later. With Iowa still on the power-play, Mike Green registered his fifth goal of the season 5:47 into the second period. Marty Sertich set the goal up with a nice drop-pass. The American Hockey League's leading scorer, Jason Krog, gave Chicago their two-goal lead back when he notched his 11th goal of the season. Chicago's second power-play goal came at 10:47 of the middle frame. The Stars had a great chance to score their third of the game, but were foiled by the goalpost at 4:43 when Joel Lundqvist's shot clanged off the iron.
Chicago's Kevin Doell scored his first of the season at 4:14 to give the Wolves a 5-2 lead. The goal was the second shorthanded goal for the Wolves in the game and the sixth allowed by Iowa this season. The Wolves would add three more goals in the third (Martins, Krog and Sterling) to earn an 8-2 win over Iowa. The eight goals allowed by Iowa on Tuesday was the most the Stars have allowed in two seasons.
Goaltender Dan Ellis faced 30 shots in the loss.
