Clinton LumberKings News Release

Clinton, IA - The number 14 held significance for the Clinton LumberKings Wednesday night at Alliant Energy Field as right-hander Taylor Stanton struck out a career-high 14 batters and the white-hot offense scored 14 runs in a 14-5 rout of the rival Quad Cities River Bandits.

Stanton (W, 11-6) tied himself with Great Lakes' Allen Webster for the league wins lead with both the best strikeout performance of his career and the best by a LumberKing this season. His 14 strikeouts bested his previous single-game high of nine, accomplished with Everett on July 15, 2009 against Vancouver. Stanton gave up two runs - including one on a solo homer by Matt Adams - but nothing more over 7.0 innings for his 11th quality start.

Patience and early defensive miscues by the Bandits got the LumberKings off to a fast start on offense. Right-hander Jorge Rondon walked the bases loaded in the first inning, then issued a wild pitch to score James Jones. An RBI single by Tim Morris and RBI groundout by Henry Contreras gave the Kings a 3-0 lead after the opening frame.

The Kings broke things wide open against Rondon with two outs in the second inning. Jones singled and scored on a two-run blast by Nick Franklin - his team-leading 21st of the year - to make it a 5-0 lead. Mickey Wiswall doubled and scored on a single by Vinnie Catricala, but the scoring wouldn't stop there. Three errors by Bandits' third-baseman Alan Ahmady kept the inning alive, and Matt Cerione added an RBI single to complete a six-run inning.

Rondon (L, 4-7) lasted just 1.2 innings, yielding eight runs (six earned) on five hits. Left-hander Nick Greenwood came on and allowed just two unearned runs over 3.1 innings to provide some stability for Quad Cities.

Cerione singled and scored on a passed ball in the fifth, then singled home Contreras in the seventh. Jones doubled off the center-field fence to plate Gabriel Noriega as well in the seventh, making it a 12-2 Clinton advantage. Ryan Royster took over for Cerione in center and singled home two in the eighth, his only hit of the night.

Right-hander Jonathan Arias served up home runs to Colin Walsh and Rainel Rosario in a three-run eighth inning but recovered for a scoreless ninth with help from a double-play turned by Franklin. Frederick Parejo made the final out, popping up to the shortstop Noriega.

Cerione (3-for-3, two RBI) and Contreras (3-for-5, 3 runs, RBI) each had three-hit games to pace the Clinton attack. Catricala went 2-for-4 with three runs scored and his team-leading 73rd RBI, extending his hitting streak to a season-best 13 games in the process. Wiswall also extended his streak to nine games on 1-for-5 hitting.

Devin Goodwin finished 3-for-4 with a run scored and Rosario added two RBI on 1-for-4 hitting for Quad Cities.

The LumberKings (32-24) have won four-straight games on the homestand and hold the top playoff spot in the West Division with 14 games remaining in the regular-season. Clinton will play two games tomorrow against the River Bandits (35-21) starting at 6:00 PM. Right-hander Erasmo Ramirez (10-4, 2.75) makes his 21st start in the opening game.
