Dayton Dragons News Release
South Bend, Ind.-Victor Estevez reached base four times and drove in three runs to lead the South Bend Silver Hawks to a 7-4 victory over the Dayton Dragons in the first game of a three-game series on Wednesday. The Dragons loss snapped their four-game winning streak.
South Bend starting pitcher Adam Worthington (5-5) pitched into the seventh inning and left the game with a 6-2 lead to earn the win. He worked six and two-thirds innings, allowing five hits and two runs with one walk and three strikeouts.
South Bend took the lead in the second inning when Estevez delivered a two-run double down the left field line to make it 2-0. In the third, South Bend's David Nick drilled a solo home run to left field, his seventh of the year, to give the Silver Hawks a 3-0 lead.
The Dragons battled back in the fourth. Didi Gregorius singled to right, stole second, went to third on Mark Fleury's single to right, and scored on Cameron Satterwhite's sacrifice fly to make it 3-1. After a Chase Weems single to left, Fleury scored on Dominic D'Anna's single to left to pull the Dragons to within one at 3-2.
But it was all South Bend the rest of the night. Keon Broxton's RBI single in the fourth made it 4-2, and Estevez added a run-scoring single in the fifth to give South Bend a 5-2 lead. Ramon Castillo's RBI double in the sixth made it 6-2.
Dayton scored on an error in the eighth and added a single run in the ninth as they lost for the sixth time in seven meetings with South Bend this season.
Dragons starting pitcher Daniel Corcino (1-1) suffered the loss. He worked four and two-thirds innings, allowing eight hits and five earned runs with three walks and four strikeouts.
The Dragons finished with eight hits. Gregorius and Fleury each had two. The Dragons did not have an extra base hit.
The Dragons (16-41, 46-80) play at South Bend (26-31, 56-69) again Thursday in the second game of a three-game series at 6:30 p.m. Ricky Bowen (3-8, 6.26) will start for Dayton against Scottie Allen (4-4, 5.05).
