Peoria, IL - The Peoria Chiefs split a doubleheader with the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Wednesday, losing game one 6-3 and using a nine-run first inning in game two to win 10-5. The split makes the Chiefs 26-29 on the second half of the season and 64-60 overall, four games out of a wild card spot.

In game one the Chiefs got on the board in the first off starter Buddy Boshers. Logan Watkins singled but was out on a fielders' choice that allowed Matt Cerda to reach first. Cerda advanced to third on a DJ Fitzgerald double and a Justin Bour double scored them both, giving the Chiefs an early 2-0 lead.

The Kernels came back and took the lead in the second inning off starter Ryan Searle thanks to some poor defense in the outfield. Randal Grichuk singled to center but Anthony Giansanti missed the ball, allowing it to roll to the wall for a two-base error, putting Grichuk on third. Michael Wing capitalized for Cedar Rapids with a single to score Grichuk. Justin Bass was hit by a pitch to put runners on first and second before Jon Karcich singled to left and Fitzgerald misplayed the ball for an error, allowing Wing and Bass to score. Matt Long doubled to center to score another run and make it 4-2 Cedar Rapids.

The Chiefs cut the lead to one run in the third thanks to some power from the top of the lineup. Cerda led off the inning and hit his second home run in as many days when he launched a pitch over the wall in right field to cut the Kernels' lead to 4-3.

The Kernels added to their lead in the fifth. Jeremy Cruz doubled and advanced to third on a Casey Haerther single. A wild pitch scored Cruz and moved Haerther to second. A fielding error by Watkins allowed Haerther to reach third base and a Wing single scored him to make it 6-3.

Searle (6-7) pitched four and 2/3 innings and gave up six runs on a career-high 11 hits while striking out two for the loss. Manolin DeLeon threw the final two and 1/3 innings and did not surrender a run on one hit while striking out two.

In game two the Kernels took the early lead, scoring off starter Jeff Lorick in the first. Long walked and advanced to second on a Cruz single. A passed ball moved both runners up and a Haerther walk loaded the bases. Another passed ball allowed Long to score and gave Cedar Rapids a 1-0 lead.

The Chiefs took advantage of poor fielding by the Kernels to take a big lead in the bottom of the first off starter Carson Andrew. Hak-Ju Lee singled and was followed by a Watkins bunt single. A throwing error on the play by Andrew allowed both runners to move up 90 feet, putting them on second and third. Cerda hit a sacrifice fly to score Lee and tie the game. Bour reached on a fielding error by third baseman Michael Demperio but Watkins did not advance. Fitzgerald singled to score Watkins and Nelson Perez singled to load the bases. Jae-Hoon Ha reached on an error by Wing at shortstop that scored Bour for a 3-1 lead before Jose Guevara doubled home Fitzgerald and Perez. Lee singled to right for his second hit of the inning, scoring Ha and Guevara to make it 7-1. Watkins singled and Lee advanced to third before Cerda walked to load the bases. Bour doubled to left to bring home Lee and Watkins and make it a 9-1 Chiefs lead after one.

The Kernels got a pair of runs back in the third off reliever Luis Liria. Long led off with a walk and came all the way around to score on a Cruz double down the line in left. Grichuk singled to score Cruz and make it a 9-3 ballgame.

Cedar Rapids added another run in the fourth off Liria. Carlos Ramirez singled and advanced to second when Demperio was hit by a pitch. Long drew a walk to load the bases and Cruz hit a sacrifice fly to Perez in left field to score Ramirez and cut the Chiefs lead to 9-4.

The Chiefs added to their lead in the bottom of the fifth off reliever Yeison Almedia. With two outs and the bases empty Watkins doubled to left and came around to score on a single by Cerda to push the Chiefs lead to 10-4.

The Kernels cut into the lead again in the sixth off Liria and reliever Yohan Gonzalez. With Liria still on the mound Ramirez walked and advanced to second on a wild pitch. Jose Jimenez walked to put runners on first and second before the Chiefs brought in Gonzalez. Jean Segura reached on a fielders' choice that put Ramirez on third but saw Jimenez called out at second. Cruz singled to score Ramirez and make it 10-5.

Lorick went two innings and gave up an unearned run on two hits while walking two and striking out three. Liria (1-0) pitched three innings and gave up four runs on four hits while walking four and striking out two for the win. Gonzalez threw the final two innings in a non-save situation and did not surrender a run on two hits and a strikeout.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game: Game One - Justin Bour (1B) - Bour went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in a pair of runs in game one.

Casey's General Store Player of the Game: Game Two - Logan Watkins (2B) - Watkins went 3-for3 with a pair of hits in the first inning, a double, a walk, and he scored three times in game two.
