
St. Paul Takes Finale in Offensive Outburst

DES MOINES, IA - The St. Paul Saints (59-62) scored 13 runs to take the series finale over the Iowa Cubs (56-67) by a score of 13-12, Sunday at Principal Park.
Both offenses got off to a quick start, with St. Paul getting three runs on a single from Chris Williams and a two-run double by John Andreoli. Iowa answered right back with a five-spot highlighted by doubles from Narciso Crook and Levi Jordan, giving them a 5-3 lead.
They scored another run in the second on an RBI single from Matt Mervis to go up 6-3. The game stayed there until the Saints had a five-run inning of their own in the fourth, getting singles from Mark Contreras and Jermaine Palacios followed by a bases clearing double from Williams.
Iowa didn't trail for long, as they answered with two runs on a solo home run from Mervis and an RBI single by Luis Vazquez to tie the game 8-8. A home run and two-run single in the top of the fifth gave St. Paul a three-run lead back, but Iowa scored one to trail 11-9.
For just the second time all game, both teams were held scoreless in the sixth, but the Saints added to their lead with runs in the seventh and eighth to go up 13-9. As they did all afternoon, Iowa came back with three runs of their own in the eighth inning, scoring on a single from Vazquez, a double from John Hicks and a sacrifice fly.
Trailing 13-12 entering the ninth, Iowa got the tying run to third but could not bring it in to score as they dropped the finale to the Saints.
POSTGAME NOTES:
- Five of Iowa's nine starters had multi-hit games today, with Michael Hermosillo and Narciso Crook each recording three-hit games.
- Iowa's final three pitchers allowed just one earned run on three hits, combining to strikeout five batters over their 4.2 innings pitched.
- Today's game time of 3:44 marked Iowa's longest game all year. Their previous long was 3:34 done back on April 6 in their second game of the year.
