Squirrels Squeeze Out Win Over Erie

A squeeze bunt in the bottom of the eighth was the difference in Friday night's game as the SeaWolves fell by a run to the Flying Squirrels 3-2.

Erie struck first in the top of the first inning against Craig Westcott who was making his Double-A debut. Andy Dirks singled with two outs and stole second for his team-leading 17th steal. Rawley Bishop came through with a two-out single to left, scoring Dirks for a 1-0 lead.

Erie built a 2-0 lead in the top of the third. Carmelo Jaime led off and drew a walk. Bryan Pounds doubled home Jaime for Erie's second run. It was the first RBI for Pounds.

Richmond responded in the bottom of the third against Erie starter Thad Weber. Tyler La Torre led off with a double and was doubled home by Ryan Lormand making it a 2-1 game. A single by Skyler Stromsmoe moved Lormand to third. Lormand scored on fielder's choice off the bat of Brandon Crawford, tying the game at 2-2.

Weber would settle down and keep the game tied until the bottom of the eighth. With noe out, Roger Kieschnick triple to put the go-ahead run 90 feet away. Connor Gillaspie followed with a walk putting runners on the corners for Juan Ciriaco. Ciriaco laid down a squeeze bunt on the first base line and Kieschnick came home to score the winning run ahead of the throw by Bishop for a 3-2 Richmond lead.

Relievers Daniel Turpen (4-4) and Rafael Cova (S-15) tossed three hitless innings to close out the ‘Wolves. Covoa struck out the side in the top of the ninth.

Despite another solid performance, Weber (4-9) took the loss. He went 7.1 innings, allowing three runs on five hits with two walks while equaling a season-high with six strikeouts. Weber, the EL leader in innings pitched, has now worked at least five innings in every start and 6.2 innings in 10 of his last 12.

Erie's longest losing streak of the season is now 11 consecutive games. The ‘Wolves have dropped seven straight and eight of their last nine by a run. Erie's record in one-run games is 5-18.
