Aeros Win Fourth Straight, Defeat Bowie 9-4

BOWIE, MD - The Akron Aeros offense stayed hot in Maryland Friday night as they defeated the Bowie Baysox 9-4 thanks to a season-high four home runs. Jerad Head, Matt McBride, Lonnie Chisenhall and Beau Mills all homered in the contest as the Aeros won their fourth game in a row. It was yet another crucial win for Akron as they moved back to .500 for the season at 40-40 overall, moving just 2.5 games behind the Baysox (43-38) for second place in the Western Division.

Head helped the Aeros begin their domination of left-handed Bowie starter Nate Nery in the top of the second. After back-to-back outs by McBride and Mills began the frame, the right fielder Head launched the next pitch into the left field bleachers for a home run.

Shortstop Greg Miclat led a Baysox response in the bottom half of that second as he smashed a two-out, two-run homer against starter Eric Berger. Akron center fielder Jordan Henry promptly began the third with a single, advanced to second on a groundout and scored on an RBI base hit to right field by Lonnie Chisenhall, tying the game at 2-2.

The Aeros broke the game open from there, knocking Nery out of the game with a five-run fifth inning. Henry singled and after two straight groundouts, McBride hit his sixth home run of the week to left field. Two singles followed while John Drennen then doubled home a run and Espino scored two with a two-bagger of his own to create the 7-2 advantage.

Reliever Shane Lindsay replaced Berger in the fifth as the Akron offense continued to shine. The third baseman Chisenhall homered with two outs in the sixth against rehabbing Orioles reliever Mike Gonzalez while Mills led the seventh with another solo shot.

Trailing by seven runs, there was virtually no shot of a home comeback for Bowie although they certainly threatened in the final two frames. Right fielder Tyler Henson tripled to start the eighth and scored on a fielding error by Head while a Carlos Rojas sacrifice fly plated the final run of the game in the bottom of the ninth inning.

Lindsay (1-0) earned the win in his first relief appearance since returning to the active Akron roster on Wednesday. The Australia native struck out four batters in two innings pitched with one walk and two hit by pitches, as he followed Berger who allowed two runs in his four frames of work. Nery (0-3) struggled and took the loss on the night, permitting two homers and the first seven runs on 12 hits overall.

Five Aeros finished with exactly two base hits in the victory while the left fielder Drennen led the way with two doubles and a single to extend his hitting streak to 11 straight games. McBride has now homered in four of five games this week and leads the team with 10 home runs on the season. The home run by the first baseman Mills was also his fourth of the season and his first since May 3rd, including a 16-game stint on the disabled list.

Akron hopes to defeat Bowie again Saturday night for the sixth game of this weeklong road trip. The contest begins at 7:05 p.m. at Prince George's Stadium and features a pitching matchup between lefty Kelvin De La Cruz (1-5, 5.94 ERA) of the Aeros and righty Steve Johnson (3-5, 5.12 ERA) of the Baysox.
