Sea Dogs, Mets Split Doubleheader

(Binghamton, NY)- Friday night's doubleheader was a case of night and day, as the Portland Sea Dogs faced the Binghamton Mets. Binghamton nearly tossed a perfect game in the opener, shutting out Portland, 10-0. In the nightcap, the Sea Dogs responded, splitting the doubleheader with a 10-2 victory.

GAME ONE

The first three innings of the game flew by, as Alex Wilson and Chris Schwinden combined to allow three baserunners on one hit and two walks. With two outs in the fourth, the Mets broke through, scoring the first runs of the night. Raul Reyes put Binghamton on the board with a solo homer, before a pair of RBI singles from Jose Coronado and Michael Fisher put the home team ahead, 3-0.

The fifth inning was more of the same for the Mets, as they blew the game open. Kirk Nieuwenhuis started the frame with a solo home run. Sean Ratliff, Joshua Satin, and Marshall Hubbard followed with hits, as Binghamton took a 5-0 lead. Mike Nickeas added a two-run double, and Jonathan Malo completed the scoring with a three-run home run.

Alex Wilson (0-2) left during the fifth inning, going four and one-third innings, allowing eight runs, nine hits, and four walks, while striking out two.

Chris Schwinden (4-5) had a perfect game through six innings for the Mets, but Che-Hsuan Lin broke up Schwinden's bid with a leadoff single in the seventh. Luis Exposito picked up Portland's second hit with a two-out double, but both runners were stranded when Anthony Rizzo flew out to center field, ending the ball game.

GAME TWO

After being blanked in the opener, the Sea Dogs wasted little time in getting on the board in the nightcap. Che-Hsuan Lin was hit by the second pitch of the game, and two batters later, Ray Chang reached with a walk. Anthony Rizzo also walked, loading the bases for Yamaico Navarro, who flew out to left field, scoring Lin.

In the third, Portland added to the lead. With one out, Ray Chang singled, and Anthony Rizzo launched a two-run blast to right field. The home run was Rizzo's seventh of the season, tying him with Nate Spears for the most among current players on the Sea Dogs.

The Mets were kept off of the scoreboard in the first four innings, but came alive with a pair of runs in the fifth. Two singles and a fielder's choice started the frame, before Jonathan Malo's RBI single brought Binghamton within two. Kirk Nieuwenhuis followed with a sacrifice fly, as the home team cut Portland's lead to 3-2.

One inning later, the Sea Dogs got those runs back, as well as two more. With one out, Che-Hsuan Lin, Nate Spears, and Ray Chang all singled, with Chang's hit producing a run. After a fielder's choice by Anthony Rizzo, Yamaico Navarro cleared the bases with a three-run shot to left field.

Ryne Lawson (5-2) picked up his fifth straight win in his first start of the season, going five innings, allowing two runs, four hits, and two walks, while striking out one. Scott Shaw (4-6) was the losing pitcher, allowing three runs, three hits, and three walks, while striking out one, in three-plus innings of work.

Portland added three more runs in the seventh, cruising to a 10-2 win.

The Sea Dogs and Mets will play game four of their five-game series on Saturday night at 7:05. Jeremy Kehrt (1-4, 2.97) will take the mound for Portland, while Binghamton counters with Josh Stinson (4-1, 3.04).
