
Squirrels Bury 'Wolves with the Long Ball

The Richmond Flying Squirrels used the long ball once again on Thursday night as they took down the SeaWolves 6-1 at The Diamond. The 'Wolves dropped the final three games of the series are now four-games under .500 at 20-24.
Erie got on the board first in the top of the first inning against Richmond starter Daryl Maday. Brandon Douglas walked with one out and stole second. With one out, Bryan Pounds connected an infield single, and on a throwing error from Jose Flores at third, Douglas scored from second for a 1-0 'Wolves lead.
In the fourth, the Flying Squirrels tied the game off of Erie starter Jay Voss. With two outs, Nick Noonan and Juan Perez connected on back-to-back singles putting runners on the corners. Roger Kieschnick grounded to second and on a Douglas error, Noonan scored tying the game at 1-1.
The game remain tied until the bottom of the seventh. Voss walked Kieschnick to start the inning. A throwing error by Voss on a pickoff attempt put Kieschnick on third. With one out, Ryan Lormand walked putting runners on the corners for Jose Flores. Flores smacked a three-run home run over the wall in left for a 4-1 Richmond edge. The Squirrels would not look back. With two outs in the inning, Justin Christian homered off of reliever Zach Simons making it a 5-1 game.
In the eighth, the Squirrels added a run off of Simons. Perez singled with one out and stole second. With two outs, Johnny Monell singled home Perez for a 6-1 lead.
Voss (0-1) took the loss going 6.2 innings, allowing four runs, three earned, on five hits with two walks and six strikeouts.
Maday took the no-decision allowing a run on two hits with four walks and three strikeouts in six innings.
Dan Ortero (1-0) earned the win tossing two scoreless innings in relief.
The SeaWolves will look to snap a three-game slide on Friday night at Jerry Uht Park against the Reading Phillies.6:35 First Pitch. RHP Mark Sorensen (3-2, 3.67 ERA) takes the mound for the 'Wolves against RHP Josh Zeid (2-3, 5.19 ERA).
