Binghamton Rumble Ponies News Release
NEW BRITAIN, CT - Robert Carson fired six innings of three-run work, but the quality start was not enough as New Britain ran past Binghamton 7-3 at New Britain Stadium Thursday afternoon. Allan Dykstra enjoyed his finest day at the plate with a 3-for-3 performance, including his fifth home run of the season.
Binghamton (14-29) climbed on top in the second inning. Rock Cats starter Brett Jacobson walked the first two hitters of the inning. Raul Reyes made him pay with an RBI single to right-center for the game's first run. Jose Coronado made it a 2-0 lead next with a seeing-eye RBI single to right.
Carson tossed the first three innings in hitless fashion but ran into trouble in the fourth when four straight hitters reached base. Mark Dolenc led off with a double. Joe Benson drove him home with an RBI single to center, which instantly cut the B-Mets lead in half. Chris Parmelee drew New Britain even in the game with an RBI double to right, which scored Benson. Evan Bigley was the last to reach with a clean single. With runners at the corners and no outs, Yangervis Solarte chased home Parmelee with a double-play groundout to short, vaulting the Rock Cats into the lead for good, 3-2.
New Britain (27-17) got sterling relief from Tyler Robertson after Jacobson departed. The southpaw hurled three, shutout innings and struck out two to notch his fourth win of the season. Jacobson fell an inning short of qualifying for the win. He worked four innings and allowed two runs on four hits.
The Rock Cats left no doubt with a four-run outburst in the seventh inning against Binghamton's bullpen. Deibinson Romero powered a one-out triple off the wall in right against Roy Merritt to start the rally. Daniel Rohlfing followed with an RBI single and was joined on base by Chris Cates, who also singled. The three straight hits forced Merritt's departure in favor of Eric Niesen. Two batters later, Dolenc smacked a three-run homer to straightaway center to increase the lead to five, 7-2.
Dykstra homered to lead off the eighth versus Cole DeVries, but the New Britain closer settled in and retired the final six men he faced to seal the Rock Cats victory.
The B-Mets return home to begin an eight-game home stand Friday at 7:05 PM against the Altoona Curve. RHP Jeurys Familia (0-1, 1.42) will start versus LHP Aaron Thompson (2-4, 4.23). The Horizons Federal Credit Union Pre-Game Show begins at 6:50 PM on Newsradio 1290 WNBF.
