New Britain Rock Cats News Release
New Britain, CT - The Rock Cats hosted Binghamton at 10:30 AM today and it was the home team that got up on the right side of the bed. In front of their 6th Sellout gathering of the still young 2011 Season, the Rock Cats defeated the aspiring Mets, 7-3, behind some timely hitting and the combined early pitching of three guys who normally work late out of the New Britain bullpen.
With 6,602 looking on, Binghamton opened the scoring in the 2nd inning on two Walks followed by two consecutive singles off New Britain's spot starter, Brett Jacobson. Raul Reyes and Jose Coronado were the Mets who collected the two hits and RBI.
In the top of the 4th - inning, the Rock Cats recorded a highly unusual double play. With Binghamton runners on 2nd and 3rd and one out, a ground ball to New Britain's 1Baseman commenced a 3-2-6-1-5 (1st Out) 3-4-6-8 DP. Every player for New Britain excepting the two corner outfielders had a hand in the inning-ending play.
New Britain responded with 3 Runs in the bottom of the 4th against Binghamton starter Robert Carson, who up to that point had yet to surrender a hit. The first four Rock Cats to bat in the frame hit safely with Joe Benson and Chris Parmelee collecting an RBI single and double, respectively. Parmelee scored the inning's 3rd Run scored when he came in from third when Yangervis Solarte grounded into a double-play.
With the Rock Cats leading 3-2, southpaw Tyler Robertson entered the game to pitch the 5th for New Britain. After surrendering a lead-off Double to Jean Luc Blaquiere, Robertson stranded him by getting the next three batters on routine outs. The tall southpaw would go on to pitch three scoreless frames.
The home team extended its lead in the 7th when they plated 4 Runs on a Triple by Deibinson Romero, an RBI single by Chris Cates, and a mammoth 3-Run home run by Mark Dolenc off Binghamton reliever Eric Niesen. Dolenc is hot, having now collected 6 hits in his last two games.
Cole DeVries came on to pitch the 8th for the Rock Cats and was promptly greeted by Alan Dykstra, who collected the loudest of his three safeties on the day, a long home run over the CF fence. DeVries did not allow another base runner the rest of the way as he induced six straight outs to close out the game.
Robertson (4-2) earned the Win for New Britain, while Binghamton's Carson (1-6) absorbed the Loss for the visitors. With the victory, the Rock Cats moved to 27-17; with today's Sellout gathering, New Britain eclipsed the 100,000 mark in home attendance in the earliest Opening (19) in franchise history.
