Squirrels Surge Past SeaWolves for Series Win, 6-1

RICHMOND, VA - The Richmond Flying Squirrels (23-23) came on late to dump the Erie SeaWolves (20-24), 6-1, in the finale of a four-game series in front of 6,084 at The Diamond on Thursday night. It was the third consecutive victory for the Squirrels as they claimed the series and got back to a .500 record for the first time since April 28th.

Erie did get on the board first, plating a run against Squirrels' right-hander Daryl Maday in the top of the first inning. With one out in the inning, Maday issued a walk to Brandon Douglas. He promptly stole second base. Douglas scored a batter later when Bryan Pounds chopped an infield-single behind the bag at third. Jose Flores was able to field the ball, but threw errantly to first base. The error allowed the SeaWolves to take a 1-0 lead. The run was earned against Maday due to a wild-pitch later in the inning.

Richmond got even with an unearned run against Erie left-hander Jay Voss. Voss retired the first 11 batters of the ballgame, but with two outs in the fourth inning, Nick Noonan recorded a single. Juan Perez followed with a hit-and-run single to right field to move Noonan to third. He scored to tie the game when Erie second baseman Brandon Douglas muffed a ground ball from Roger Kieschnick.

Both starters worked smoothly through the sixth inning. Maday departed to a no-decision, having allowed just a lone run on two hits. He walked four and struck out three.

Voss came back in the seventh and found trouble when he walked Roger Kieschnick to start the inning. An errant pick-off attempt allowed Kieschnick to advance all the way to third base before Voss walked Ryan Lormand to put two runners aboard. Jose Flores followed and cranked a three-run home run to left field to put Richmond in front, 4-1. Flores' third of the year gave the Squirrels a lead they wouldn't relinquish. They would however add to it. Justin Christian greeted right-hander Zach Simons rudely later in the inning when he blasted his third home run of the season to left field.

Voss (0-1) took the loss in his first Double-A appearance of the season. He was charged with four runs on five hits. He walked two and struck out six. Richmond capped the scoring with a run off reliever Zach Simons in the eighth inning.

Right-hander Dan Otero (1-0) took over for Maday in the seventh inning and fired two scoreless innings. He earned his first win of the season while allowing two hits and striking out two. Right-hander Edwin Quirarte polished off the victory for the Squirrels with a scoreless ninth.

The Squirrels travel to Akron, OH, to open a four-game series with the Akron Aeros (Cleveland Indians) at 7:05 PM on Friday night at Canal Park. LHP Clayton Tanner (1-4, 3.60) will make the start for Richmond in the series-opener against LHP Matt Packer (1-3, 4.30) for the Aeros.
