(Portland, ME)-Adeiny Hechavarria hit a two-run homer and drove in three runs and Darin Mastroianni went 2-for-5 and had three RBI as the Fisher Cats beat Portland 13-7 on Thursday night at Hadlock Field.
B. J. LaMura (3-3) pitched the Fisher Cats to the win, working the first five innings, allowing three hits and three runs (two earned). He walked three and struck out seven. The win was the 30th of the season for New Hampshire, the first team in the Eastern League to reach that mark.
Portland opened the scoring in the bottom of the first without the benefit of a hit. Jeremy Hazelbaker drew a lead-off walk. On an attempted steal, the throw from catcher Yan Gomes went into centerfield allowing Hazelbaker to reach third. He scored on a wild pitch.
The Fisher Cats moved in front for good in the top of the second inning, loading the bases when Mike McDade was hit-by-pitch, Moises Sierra singled and Travis d'Arnaud walked. Yan Gomes (3-for-5, 2 RBI) singled home McDade for a 1-0 lead and Mark Sobolewski put the Fisher Cats in front with a sacrifice fly.
New Hampshire (30-16) took advantage of three Sea Dog errors in the top of the fourth inning. d'Arnaud walked and Gomes followed with a double. Callix Crabbe grounded under the glove of Jorge Padron at first as both runners scored. Crabbe wound up at third on the play after a throwing error and scored when Darin Mastroianni's fly to right was dropped to make it 5-1.
The Sea Dogs (13-30) rallied with two runs in the bottom of the fourth after loading the bases on a double by Alex Hassan, a single by Ryan Lavarnway and a walk to Tim Federowicz. Will Middlebrooks walked to make it 5-2 and Lavarnway scored on a sacrifice fly by Chih-Hsien Chiang.
The Fisher Cats added four more in the top of the fifth inning. d'Arnaud singled and scored on a double by Gomes to make it 6-3. Sobolewski singled Gomes to third. Mastroianni reached on a fielders choice as Gomes scored and Adeiny Hechavarria hit a two-run homer for a 9-3 lead.
Portland scored two times in the bottom of the eighth inning including one on a home run by designated hitter Ryan Lavarnway to pull within 9-5.
New Hampshire scored four times in the top ninth inning on an RBI single by Mastroianni, a sacrifice fly by Hechavarria and a two-run homer by McDade, who now has a ten-game hit streak before the Sea Dogs answered with two in the bottom of the ninth for a 13-7 final.
Miguel Gonzalez (0-2) took the loss for Portland.
