Altoona Curve News Release
CURVE, Pa. - The Baysox became the first team to take a series from the Altoona Curve at Blair County Ballpark this season as they were victorious, 4-2, on Thursday in the series finale. The Curve had not lost a home series prior to the series with the Baysox.
Xavier Avery led off the game with a triple off of starter Aaron Pribanic (4-2) and eventually scored on a sacrifice fly by Robbie Widlansky later in the first to give Bowie a, 1-0, lead. Altoona answered in the bottom half of the second off Baysox starter Steve Johnson (3-1) when Tony Sanchez slugged his second home run of the season to tie up the game.
It would be the last run that Altoona would score before the ninth as the Baysox immediately responded with two runs in the top half of the third off Pribanic. It was once again Avery starting the inning with a single and Greg Miclat followed with a single of his own to place two on with no one out. Widlansky hit into a fielder's choice to place runners at the corners before Pribanic walked Steve Lerud to load the bases.
With the bases full, L.J. Hoes singled into left to bring home Avery from third and place Bowie back in front. Pedro Florimon followed with a single to right field that brought Widlansky home from third and the Baysox had a two-run lead at, 3-1.
They would add a run in the fifth off Pribanic, who did finish five innings. He allowed a home season-high four runs on a season-high 10 total hits. The Curve got solid relief though that kept them in the ballgame from Matt McSwain and Noah Krol. McSwain went three innings allowing two hits, no runs, with four strikeouts and Krol worked a perfect ninth.
In the ninth, against Baysox closer Jose Diaz, the Curve were able to get the tying run to the plate with no one out. Eric Fryer, who went hitless and ended his five-game hitting streak, led the inning off with a walk, followed by a single by Jeremy Farrell. With the tying run at the plate, Diaz then struck out Sanchez, allowed the second run of the game on a sacrifice fly to Shelby Ford, and struck out Miles Durham to end the game. The save was the third for Diaz in the four-game series and it adds to his league lead.
With the loss, the Curve end their eight-game homestand with a 4-4 record as they will hit the road for seven games before they return home. The Curve will travel to Binghamton, NY to take on the Mets for a four-game series on Friday. The game, scheduled for 7:05 p.m., will be started by LHP Aaron Thompson (2-4, 4.23) for the Curve and for the Mets it will be RHP Jeurys Familia (0-1, 1.42). The Curve return home for six games in seven days beginning on Friday, June 3rd against Portland.
Game time is set for 7:05 p.m. with pregame coverage on ESPN Radio 1430, WVAM and the Curve Radio Network beginning at 6:35 p.m.
