Windsor Spitfires News Release
The Windsor Spitfires started strong but couldn't hold off the red-hot London Knights.
London won their seventh in a row after defeating the Spitfires 7-4 in Ontario Hockey League action on Friday in front of 9,036 fans at Budweiser Gardens.
The Knights posted the first four shots on goal of the first period, but it was Windsor who scored first at 12:57.
Nashville Predators NHL prospect Egor Afanasyev scored on a long shot that was deflected off a London player and beat Knights goaltender Brett Brochu. For Afanasyev, it was his 20th goal of the season. Curtis Douglas had the lone assist.
Windsor would head into the dressing room with a 2-0 lead after Will Cuylle scored on the doorstep at 18:57, his 17th of the season, from Wyatt Johnston and Connor Corcoran.
It didn't take London long to get on the board in the next frame. Just 1:34 into the second period, LA Kings prospect Markus Phillips scored his 2nd of the season to make it a 2-1 game.
Windsor starting netminder Xavier Medina made a highlight reel save that will certainly be among the OHL Janes Saves of the Week. He stuck out his glove and robbed Ryan Merkley all alone in front of the goal.
London would tie the game on a goal by Liam Foudy at 12:21 of the second period and then grab the lead on the power play on a goal by Connor McMicheal at 13:52.
But the Spitfires would tie the game 3-3 only 56 seconds later. Douglas, a Dallas Stars NHL prospect, won the faceoff back to Afanasyev who ripped a wrist shot past Brochu at 14:48 for his second of the game and 21st of the season.
With the game tied 3-3 early in the third period, London took the lead for good. McMichael banged home a loose puck after Medina made three big saves. His second of the game at 1:41 made it a 4-3 game. Nathan Dunkley made it 5-3 for London with a goal at 13:09.
Windsor would get some life 44 seconds later. Tyler Angle, a Columbus Blue Jackets NHL prospect, scored his 23rd of the season at 13:53 to make it a one goal game. But Luke Evangelista scored at 14:35 and McMichael finished his hat trick by scoring into an empty net at 17:25 to secure London's 7-4 victory.
Medina finished with 30 saves on the night while Brochu, a Tilbury native, made 37 saves.
The Spitfires remain in fourth place in the Western Conference with a record of 28-12-5, good for 61 points. Windsor will try to snap a two-game losing streak in Owen Sound on Saturday. Puck drop is at 7:30 p.m.
