Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads will look to continue their undefeated homestand this weekend on Friday night against the North Bay Battalion, as presented by CIBC in support of Canadian Blood Services and Hockey Gives Blood. The Steelheads will then take on the Sudbury Wolves on Sunday as we host our 3rd annual Pucks 'N' Paws game.
Mississauga has climbed the standings quickly, currently sitting in 2nd place in the Central Division, just four points behind the visiting Sudbury Wolves for 1st place.
CHARACTER WEEKEND
The Steelheads started off last weekend with a Thursday night loss on the road to the Niagara IceDogs, where Mississauga outshot Niagara 48-17. Cole Schwindt and Thomas Harley both registered two assists in the contest. The Trout would not be discouraged, as they bounced back with a regulation win on Friday against a strong Peterborough Petes team, with James Hardie recording three points (2G, 1A).
The Fish faced a tough test against the Kitchener Rangers on Sunday, the top team in the Western Conference, who have only lost one game in regulation since mid November. It was Superhero Day at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre, as the Steelheads honoured Reese Meyer, wearing special Superhero themed jerseys. Mississauga battled back from a three-goal deficit at the start of the third period to win in overtime, with Cole Schwindt scoring the game winner on the heels of a natural hat-trick. All jerseys from the game are currently being auctioned off with all proceeds going towards the Meyer family. Click here to place your bid!
LEADING THE WAY
2020 NHL Draft eligible prospect James Hardie has been on fire for the Steelheads lately, recording 19 points (10G, 9A) in 10 games in the month of January. The Barrie, ON native was recently ranked by NHL Central Scouting as one of the top players in North America for the upcoming draft, and it won't be long before he rises in the rankings as he continues to prove himself as an elite player in the OHL.
Florida Panthers prospect Cole Schwindt returned to the lineup on January 17th from a lower-body injury, and picked up right where he left off, recording a point in all five games he's played since coming back (5G, 4A). On the season, Schwindt has now registered an impressive 49 points (22G, 27A) in 43 games, leading the way for the Steelheads as they look to finish a strong month of January.
The Steelheads latest hot streak wouldn't exist without the play of goaltender Kai Edmonds, who has appeared in all 10 games for Mississauga this month, while posting an impressive .932 SV%. Edmonds has recorded 30+ saves in 7 games in January.
RIVALRY WEEKEND
Mississauga will play two home games against divisional opponents this weekend, on Friday against the North Bay Battalion and Sunday against the Sudbury Wolves.
The Steelheads and Battalion have met twice this season, with the Steelheads winning both games. Keean Washkurak registered three points back on December 13th, while James Hardie and Nicholas Canade both recorded three points on January 9th, leading Mississauga to the victories.
The North Bay Battalion (11-32-2-0) currently sit last place in the Eastern Conference, with two wins in their last ten games. North Bay has a 4-20-0-0 record while playing on the road this season. They are led by overage forwards Luke Moncada (45GP, 24G-15A) and Shane Bulitka (45GP-19G, 17A).
The Mississauga Steelheads are scratching in anticipation of our 3rd annual Pucks 'N' Paws game on Sunday, February 2nd as we take on the Sudbury Wolves, presented by Global News, Barks n' Rec and Ren's Pets. Steelheads fans will have the opportunity to bring their dog to the game, and all tickets purchased in the dog sections 11 to 16 will see a $5 donated back in support of the St. John Ambulance Therapy Dog Program.
The festivities will include a doggy photo booth, balloon artists and plenty of opportunities for your dog to receive treats at our vendors. The Steelheads will welcome Global News' special weather analyst Storm the Weather Dog as he and TV personality Anthony Farnell will be dropping the puck for the ceremonial faceoff prior to the start of the game.
The hockey club is running a social media contest for the best dog trick. To enter, follow @ohlsteelheads on Instagram and tag us in a video of your dog performing his or her most impressive trick. The winner selected will receive a complimentary pair of tickets to the game as well as the opportunity to perform the trick at ice level during the second intermission!
It will be the last opportunity for hockey fans to catch top 2020 NHL Draft eligible prospect Quinton Byfield at the Paramount Fine Foods Centre this season. Byfield, a native of Newmarket, ON, was recently ranked as the #2 overall North American Skater by NHL Central Scouting for the upcoming draft, and has registered 72 points (31G, 41A) in 37 games this season.
