Soo Greyhounds News Release

PETERBOROUGH, ON - Head Coach John Dean spoke of the start being the key to the game. Whether it be the first five, ten, fifteen or twenty minutes, he wanted to see his team make that first big step.

The Greyhounds specialty team would spark that request in making it a reality taking two goal lead before the game was ten minutes old on Thursday Night in Peterborough.

Shorthanded early on, the Hounds would notch the game opening goal when ZACK TROTT created the turnover deep in the Peterborough zone and centred it out front for TYE KARTYE to fire home his 19th goal of the season.

Then after killing off a second consecutive Petes powerplay, the Greyhounds would quickly get a man advantage of their own.

ZACK TROTT would give the Hounds a 2-0 lead, by notching his 2nd point of the night, and 50th of the season, beating Hunter Jones at 8:09.

That goal also equalled the Hounds second on four shots in the period.

In order to stay perfect (3-for-3) on the penalty kill in the first period, the Greyhounds received strong plays by a pair of defenseman in the second half of the period.

First DREW WAWROW slid and broke up a play by the Petes' Akil Thomas, while shortly thereafter team captain RYAN O'ROURKE took the brunt of a point shot to help negate the Petes opportunity.

NICK MALIK's biggest save of the period game late in the first when Nick Robertson forced a turnover on a Hounds defenceman one-on-one at the line, and skated in all alone but would be denied.

Hounds led 2-0 through the first period.

Like the Hounds, Peterborough pressed early in the second period but lost some of that step when Daylon Groulx was assessed a minor penalty just 1:21 into the period.

That would be one of three powerplays the Greyhounds would enjoy in the second period, but were unable to create more breathing room over the Petes on any of them.

Shorthanded chances continued for ZACK TROTT as he had a breakaway but was denied in his blocker side attempt.

KALVYN WATSON dropped the mitts in his hometown just over five minutes into the second period, while his opponent Brady Hinz was assessed the instigating minor and misconduct as well.

The contest would become a one goal game late in the period.

With Peterborough on the powerplay, NIck Robertson was patient before putting a shot to the glove hand of NICK MALIK to cut into the Greyhounds lead.

The two teams combined for twenty-six shots in the period (12 Soo, 14 Peterborough), as the Hounds took a 2-1 lead through forty minutes.

A back and fourth third period went scoreless as the Hounds held that lead (2-1) until the final buzzer in downing the Petes.

Netminder NICK MALIK was named 1st star of the game, making 37 saves on 38 shots.

The win improves the Greyhounds record to 22-23-2-0, good for 46 points. They have now won two-in-a-row.
