Oshawa Generals News Release

OSHAWA, ON - Oshawa was looking to set the tone tonight against the Petes. This is the first game of a home-and-home against the Petes, with the second half playing out tomorrow evening in the Peter-Patch. Coming into this one, out of four games played the Petes won the first three and your Generals won the last one.

Generals Starting Five

Forward: Allan McShane - Phi Tomasino - Ty Tullio

Defense: David Jesus - Giovanni Vallati

Starting Goalies:

Oshawa Generals - Jordan Kooy

Peterborough Petes - Tye Austin

1st Period:

Nico Gross came out ready to play he only needed 29 seconds to net the first of the game, besting Tye Austin with a shot from the point. Later in the period, Gross continued his strong play. While fighting for the puck a Petes player launched his twig halfway down the ice, went to the bench, came back, retrieved the puck at the blueline carried it low and around the net for a near goal on a wraparound.

Then Generals' special teams took over. Recording two shorthanded goals and one powerplay goal during the period.

Neumann started off, shorthanded, grabbing the puck at centre ice skating in over the Petes blue line, winding up and cranking his 34th of the season past Austin. Captain MacLean was next, on the powerplay, receiving a pass from Brett Harrison from behind the net to the slot. He wristed his eighth of the season to the upper half of the net. Finally, Ryan Stepien, the player who came our way in exchange for Serron Noel, netted his first with the team, shorthanded. Stepien split the "D" at the Petes blue line, and carried it in on Austin. He went backhand-forehand and roofed the puck over the glove hand, then stuck the landing with a dive reminiscent of Generals' legend Bobby Orr's Stanley Cup winning goal from 1970. It looked as though the period would go entirely to the Generals, but Nick Robertson of the Petes got the Petes on the board netting his 36th of the year with 48 seconds remaining in the period.

The Gens ended the period with a 4-1, with Oshawa outshooting the Petes 12-9.

2nd Period:

The Petes swapped out Tye Austin for Hunter Jones in net to start the second.

Oshawa controlled play throughout the early half of the period. Their style of play shifted from throwing everything and anything on goal to trying to passing more in an attempt to get Jones into compromising positions and get a goal that way - and it worked out.

Captain MacLean struck again with a goal off a rebounded shot from Oliver Suni, his second of the game, and Suni's third assist of the game. Just under two minutes later. Tomasino got the puck in the slut from McShane who dug the puck out of the corner to Phil who dipsy-doodled his way through the slot and rifled a shot past Jones.

The Petes were still there, with Curtis Trolley sneaking his first OHL goal past Kooy on a wrist shot to the glove side.

A late Petes powerplay made Gens goalie Jordan Kooy stand on his head. The Petes held possession in the Oshawa zone, and got their shots in, but Kooy was a gymnast out there flipping around like Dominik Hasek. The crowd erupted in the aftermath of a couple of his more superb stops.

The period ended 6-2 for your boys in red-white-and-blue and they also controlled the shots category by 24-21.
