Brampton Steelheads News Release
Mississauga, ON - The Mississauga Steelheads took on the North Bay Battalion on Friday night in a clash of the Central Division rivals.
The Battalion got out to an early lead, as with the Steelheads in the box for slashing, Avery Winslow took a shot that deflected off the stick of Mitchell Russell and over the shoulder of Edmonds. Just a few minutes later, Aidan Prueter found Ty Collins in front of the net, who re-directed the pass by North Bay goaltender Cameron Lamour. With five minutes remaining in the period, Cole Schwindt drew a tripping penalty that sent the Steelheads to the powerplay. Calvin Martin capitalized on a nice tic-tac-toe passing play from James Hardie and Schwindt to give the Steelheads their first lead of the game. Mississauga took a two-goal lead as Hardie batted a pass from Thomas Harley out of midair and into the back of the net. At the end of the first, the Steelheads led 3-1 and were outshooting the Battalion 12-7.
The Steelheads had a great scoring opportunity midway through the second, as Nick Isaacson found William Portokalis on a 2-on-1, but the puck was kicked away by a North Bay defenceman before it crossed the line. Soon after, James Hardie burst in the zone on a breakaway but was kicked away by the right pad of Lamour. Hardie had an opportunity to redeem himself on the breakaway, making no mistake the second time, going forehand-backhand over Lamour to make the score 4-1. Mississauga took a three-goal lead into the second intermission, looking to close out another victory in the third.
There was no slowing down the Fish in the third period, as Martin found Prueter on the doorstep for the tap-in, recording their second points of the game on the play. North Bay cut the lead back to three goals, as Liam Arnsby beat Edmonds up high on a breakaway. Thomas Harley made a nice move to cut around the North Bay defender and put a perfectly placed shot under the crossbar, making the score 6-2 with just minutes to play. The Steelheads were in complete control of this one, outshooting North Bay 45-19, as they cruised to a 6-2 victory.
Florida Panthers draft pick Cole Schwindt set a new career-high with four assists in a game, while 2020 NHL Draft eligible prospect James Hardie registered three points (2G, 1A) to help the Steelheads to victory. With the win and a Sudbury Wolves loss, the race for first place in the central division continues to tighten in advance of the Wolves visit to the Paramount Fine Foods Centre on Sunday.
Following the game, James Hardie spoke about another big win "Kai Edmonds played unreal in net tonight, he was really good. I thought my line played really good tonight, Schwindt was setting me up with good passes and we were playing well together."
