State College Spikes News Release

AUBURN, NY - Danny Diekroeger and Luis Cruz each homered to bolster a strong pitching effort as the State College Spikes defeated the Auburn Doubledays, 4-1, in the first seven-inning game of a doubleheader on Sunday afternoon at Falcon Park.

The win enabled the Spikes (37-25) to reduce their magic number for a Pinckney Division title to seven, while increasing their lead in the division to seven games.

Diekroeger's solo home run in the first inning extended his hitting streak to 12 games. Cruz went deep over the left field wall in the second for his first home run of the season.

Brett Wiley also contributed an RBI single for State College as part of a three-hit game.

Trey Nielsen started for the Spikes and went four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three. Brandon Lee (2-2) allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out three for the win. Kyle Grana (6) struck out two batters as part of a one-hit ninth for the save. Grana, who is slated to pitch in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday, now has 52 strikeouts on the season, the fourth-best total in the league.

Auburn (26-34) starter Anderson Martinez (1-2) took the loss after yielding four runs on five hits and two walks. Martinez also struck out two in the effort.
