Vermont Lake Monsters News Release

BURLINGTON, VT --- After having just one baserunner over the first five innings, the Brooklyn Cyclones scored five runs on five hits in the top of the sixth inning and went on to complete a three-game sweep of the Vermont Lake Monsters with a 7-3 New York-Penn League victory at historic Centennial Field on Sunday evening.

Vermont's Dillon Overton retired nine of the 10 batters he faced, the only baserunner being on a two-out Tyler Moore single in the second inning, and struckout five over three innings. The 2013 second-round pick continues his comeback from Tommy John surgery last summer with his third three-inning start for the Lake Monsters and has now allowed just one run on four hits with one walk and 11 strikeouts in nine innings for Vermont.

2014 third-round pick Brett Graves came on in relief of Overton to quickly set the Cyclones down in order in both the fourth and fifth innings, but Brooklyn's offense came to life in the sixth trailing 2-0. Tucker Tharp and Anthony Chavez got the rally started with back-to-back leadoff singles, then advanced to second and third on a sacrifice bunt. The Cyclones got their first run on as Tharp scored on a wild pitch on ball four to John Mora. Michael Conforto followed with an RBI single to right to tie the game and Jhoan Urena followed with a two-run double to right for a 4-2 Brooklyn lead. The Cyclones got their final run of the inning on a Tomas Nido RBI single off reliever Fernand Cruzado.

Vermont had taken an early 2-0 lead with a J.,P. Sportman RBI single in the first inning and a Trent Gilbert sacrifice fly after a Max Kuhn leadoff triple in the fourth. After the five-run sixth for Brooklyn, the Lake Monsters got an unearned run in the seventh to cut the deficit to 5-3 before Brooklyn added a pair of runs in the seventh off 2014 second-round pick Daniel Gossett on another sacrifice fly and Moore RBI single.

Cyclones starter Casey Meisner (3-4) allowed three runs (one earned) on six hits with one walk and 10 strikeouts over 6 2/3 innings to earn the win, while Urena and Moore both collected two hits. Brooklyn (35-28) has now won eight straight games at Centennial Field, including a three-game sweep against the Lake Monsters in both 2013 and 2014. The Cyclones have now gone 5-1 overall vs. Vermont in each of the last threee seasons.

Vermont (26-37), which has lost four of its last five after going 8-3 in the previous 11, will be off for the next two days for the NY-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday at Brooklyn. The Lake Monsters return to action on Wednesday for a two-game series at Tri-City and return to Centennial Field to host the Staten Island Yankees in a three-game series beginning on Friday.
