Winning Streak Ends at Five, Jammers Lose 4-3

JAMESTOWN, NY - Unfortunately, all good things must come to an end. The Jamestown Jammers saw their five game winning streak come to an end Sunday afternoon at the hands of the Batavia Muckdogs, 4-3. Things were looking good for the Jammers heading into the top of the ninth inning. Jamestown held a 3-2 lead over the Muckdogs, but after the first two batters of the inning were retired, second basemen Mason Davis, and shortstop Javier Lopez both walked against Jammer reliever Miguel Rosario to put runners on second and first with two down. After Eric Dorsch was brought on to try sealing the deal for the Jammers, Batavia first basemen Carlos Duran would deliver the biggest hit of the game. On Dorsch's first pitch, Duran would lace a 2-RBI double to right field to put the Muckdogs ahead 4-3, and deliver the Jammers one of their toughest losses of the season.
The Jammers got out to a great start in the bottom of the first inning. The lead-off hitter for the Jammers, center fielder Elvis Escobar would connect for his first home run of the year off of Batavia starter Ben Holmes to give the Jammers an early 1-0 lead.
Jamestown would extend their lead to 2-0 in the next inning. Third basemen Chase Simpson would start the inning with a single. First basemen Kevin Ross attempted to bunt Simpson over, but he would he would reach base on the play after Holmes misfielded the ball. With runners on second and first with nobody out, third basemen Francisco Aponte laid down a successful sac bunt to put runners on second and third with one out. The next batter, shortstop Trace Tam Sing would then score Simpson, with a sacrifice fly to right field to score Simpson, and put the Jammers up 2-0.
Batavia would answer back with a run in the top of the fourth, and a run in the top of the fifth to knot the game at 2. In the fourth, designated hitter K.J. Woods would launch his fourth home run of the year off Jamestown starter Austin Coley. In the fifth, catcher Brad Haynal would score right fielder Iramis Olivencia with an RBI single to tie the game at 2 apiece.
That would remain the score until the bottom of the eighth inning, when the Jammers would pull ahead 3-2. Escobar would begin the rally with a single to centerfield. He would move to second on a sacrifice bunt by left fielder Jordan Luplow. Catcher Taylor Gushue would then deliver what many thought would be the game winning hit, with a scorching double to the wall in right-center field. That hit would score Escobar, and put the Jammers up 3-2 heading into the final frame, while also setting the stage for Duran's heroics.
For the Jammers offensively, Eacobar, Simpson, and second basemen Erik Forgione picked up multiple hits. On the Batavia side, Duran, Haynal, and Woods collected two hits apiece.
On the mound for the Jammers, Coley would work 3 2/3 innings, surrender four hits, and only give up one run, while striking out five. He would be relieved with two outs in the fourth by Oderman Rocha, who would end up tossing one inning, giving up one run, and striking out two. Julio Eusebio would come in after Rocha, and fire 1 1/3 innings, and not give up any hits, or runs. Rosario would enter the game in the top of the sixth, and looked great until running into trouble with two outs in the ninth. Rosario's final line was 2 2/3 innings pitched, two runs allowed, and he surrendered three walks. Dorsch would come in to relieve Rosario in a tough situation in the ninth, and give up the eventual game-winning hit to Duran.
Both the Jammers, and Muckdogs will be off Monday and Tuesday for the All-Star Break. The 2014 NYPL All-Star Game will take place Tuesday at MCU Park in Brooklyn. Outfielder Carl Anderson, infielder Kevin Ross, and relief pitcher Sam Street will represent the Jammers.
Batavia and Jamestown will square off at Diethrick Park again Wednesday night, for the first game after the break. That game is scheduled to start at 7:05pm.
