Sunday Sweep: Cyclones Win Streak Continues

Casey Meisner and the Cyclones kept their winning streak going, sweeping the Lake Monsters and picking up a 7-3 victory on Sunday night. Brooklyn has won five games in a row, as they go into the New York-Penn League All Star break and hold onto first place in the wild card race.

The Lake Monsters made the first mark on the scoreboard in the bottom of the first inning. Yairo Munoz led off with a single, stole second base, and advanced to third on an error from catcher Tomas Nido, who attempted to catch Munoz stealing. J.P. Sportman knocked in Munoz with a single to right field to give a 1-0 lead.

Vermont tacked another run onto the board in the fourth inning that started with a triple over the head of centerfielder John Mora, from Max Kuhn. A sacrifice fly from Trent Gilbert drove in Vermont's second run of the game.

Tucker Tharp and Anthony Chavez hit back-to-back singles to start the sixth inning for the Cyclones. John Mora then knocked a sacrifice bunt back towards the mound to advance the runners into scoring position and put the tying run at second base. Brett Graves walked Amed Rosario, but threw a wild pitch for ball four that allowed Tharp to score from third. Michael Conforto kept things going with a bloop single that scored Chavez and tied the game at two. Clean-up hitter, Jhoan Ureña, then rocketed a two-RBI double to give the Cyclones a two run lead and make it a 4-2 ball game.

Vermont made a pitching change, but Brooklyn continued the damage with a line drive single to right field from Tomas Nido, who now has 13 hits in his last eight games, that Ureña raced home on and give the Cyclones a 5-3 lead.

Thanks to a couple of errors from the Cyclones defense, the Lake Monsters were able to add a run to the scoreboard in the seventh inning. Cameron Griffin replaced Casey Meisner in the seventh with two outs, coming in with one runner on. A strong start from Meisner earned him a season high of ten strikeouts and just one earned run. Kelly Secrest and Brandon Welch kept the Lake Monsters hitless through the eighth and ninth inning and secured the Cyclones lead.

In the top of the eighth, the Cyclones scored two more runs, extending their lead to 7-3. John Mora beat out a bunt single to get things started once again for the Cyclones. Amed Rosario hits a single to right field and Mora moved to third. Michael Conforto hit a sacrifice fly to plate Mora. Jhoan Ureña singled and Tomas Nido grounded out, but both runners advanced to second and third. Tyler Moore picked up his second hit of the game that drove in Rosario, but the Lake Monsters were able to get out of the inning by throwing out an aggressive running Ureña at home.

The Cyclones will return to MCU Park on Thursday to take on their bridge rival, the Staten Island Yankees. Thursday will be the last Jersday Thursday of the season, featuring a Brooklyn Bridge giveaway to the first 3,000 fans.
