Spikes Sweep Doubleheader from Doubledays

AUBURN, NY - The State College Spikes used a homer from Robleys Reyes and a three-run surge in the seventh to come back and defeat the Auburn Doubledays, 7-4, to earn a doubleheader sweep after homers from Danny Diekroeger and Luis Cruz led a 4-1 win in the first game on Sunday afternoon at Falcon Park.

State College (38-25) reduced its magic number for a New York-Penn League Pinckney Division title to five with its pair of wins and Jamestown. The Spikes also further increased their lead in the division to eight games with 13 remaining on the regular season schedule as they stretched their winning streak to five games in a row.

Reyes's two-run homer, his second at Falcon Park this season and third of the year overall, tied the second game at 4-4 in the fifth inning of the seven-inning contest. In the seventh, Diekroeger stretched his hitting streak to 13 games with a two-out RBI single to put the Spikes up, 5-4. Nick Thompson and Jake Stone then followed with back-to-back singles to cap off the scoring.

Brett Wiley had four hits over the doubleheader, including three in the day's first game. Wiley also collected two doubles in the twin bill and knocked in a run.

Kenny Peoples-Walls had two hits in Game Two, and scored a pair of runs as well.

In the first game, Diekroeger delivered a solo shot to right field in the first inning and Cruz belted a two-run blast to left, his first homer of the year, to stake the Spikes to a lead they would not relinquish.

Josh Lucas (2-1) earned the win in the afternoon's second game after entering the game with runners on second and third and one out in the sixth, striking out two straight batters, and then tossing a scoreless seventh. Lucas struck out a total of four hitters and hit one batter in the victory.

In game one, Trey Nielsen started for the Spikes and went four scoreless innings, allowing four hits and a walk while striking out three. Brandon Lee (2-2) allowed a run on four hits and a walk while striking out three for the win. Kyle Grana (6) struck out two batters as part of a one-hit ninth for the save. Grana, who is slated to pitch in the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday, now has 52 strikeouts on the season, the fourth-best total in the league.

Auburn (26-35) reliever Chase McDowell (1-2) took the loss in the second game after allowing the Spikes' three seventh-inning runs on four hits in one frame on the mound. In game one, starter Anderson Martinez (1-2) took the loss for the Doubledays after yielding four runs on five hits and two walks. Martinez also struck out two in the effort.

Dale Carey plated two runs for Auburn with a bases-loaded single in the fourth inning, while Chris Riopedre knocked in another in the same frame. Cody Gunter hit a solo home run in the sixth for the only Doubledays run.

The Spikes will now send four players to the New York-Penn League All-Star Game on Tuesday night at MCU Park in Brooklyn as the league's regular season schedule pauses until Wednesday. Reyes and Grana will join infielder Darren Seferina, and pitcher Will Anderson on the South squad for the showcase game.

The Spikes will then come back home to face the Doubledays for a pair of 7:05 p.m. games next Wednesday and Thursday at Medlar Field at Lubrano Park.
